you SHOULD NOT wear shoes or socks at all during the healing period. if you do there is a very likely chance that your tattoo will heal poorly and look like crap. and your foot will swell and be even more painful than it already is. your tattoo artist should have told you before but you are not supposed to wear shoes for the whole two weeks while your foot is healing.

I got a tattoo on the top of my foot and on the inside arch, i worked 40 hr a week standing up the whole time. i took an ibuprofen and put bactracin(it fights off bacteria so your tat wont become infected) on it and wrapped it in plastic wrap every time you get a break take the plastic wrap off and let it breath, then re wrap it with a new piece. when you get home take the plastic wrap off and let your tattoo breath for the rest of the night and repeat the next day. just do this until you get a good scab over the tattoo and then you can where a sock with out it hurting. My tattoo came out wonderful i didn't have to get any type of touch ups when it was done healing.

By avoiding touching it or getting it infected!! I hope your shoes are big enough. I don't have tattoos on my feet, but I do have lots of them. I would suggest wrapping your foot up in plastic wrap again (I'm assuming the artist did that after he/she finished the tattoo) and covering it with a sock. I know you're not supposed to wrap it up again, but it will just get too gross if you just stick it in a sock, PLUS it's going to hurt like hell when you take the sock off. If you get long enough breaks, take it all off, wash your foot with antibacterial soap, pat it dry with a soft, clean towel, re-apply whatever ointment you're using, re-wrap it, etc. I hope you're off day after tomorrow to put that puppy up and let it breathe! :) Oh, and you can take some Aleve or Advil or something like that to reduce the swelling and pain a little.

"Preperation H", haemorroid cream, it's an anti inflammitory, antiseptic, mild painkiller all rolled into 1! Trust me!
where on your foot did you get it done? If its on the top of your foot as opposed to the ankle, I suggest you wear "flip flops" (beach sandals) to prevent your shoe pulling the tattoo off.

There's no good way to prevent pain. Concentrate on keeping it healthy by making sure to replace the bandages and such. Don't take a painkiller because it'll think your blood and make you bleed more!

Take an aleve, take the laces out of your shoes, and pray it doesn't get messed up.
