extremely racist. Im hispanic, my family born and raised in NM as far as i can date back my history we dont come from mexico. Many New Mexicans are hispanic (not mexican, completely different) but do resemble some mexicans so you cant go off of what you THINK looks like a mexican. In New Mexico the majority of the time you will be wrong, alot of hispanics here dont even speak spanish! BTW i AM anti-illegal.

Probably. More important is why you are checking them and whether there is a state, or federal law that prohibits it. For instance, in many cities a policeman is prohibited from inquiring into immigration status (he can be fined or dismissed for this). It might be allowed or even required in some places if you are giving them a loan, but it might be unlawful discrimination under the civil rights act (a felony) to even ask, if you intend to refuse to sell them a pair of shoes (their status in that case is irrellevant).

It's not racism because being "Mexican" isn't a race. It would be unfair to go after only "Mexicans" or people that look "Mexican"... Why not just check everybody, including Arabs, Europeans, Africans, etc. and just be done with it.

BTW, I'm "Mexican" but I look "whiter" than some "whites." How's that for ruining your view of the world where "Mexicans" probably all look like little brown guys with sombreros, sarapes and chanclas.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IS NOT ABOUT RACE. IT IS ABOUT THE LAW! MEXICAN IS NOT A RACE!

Why do people keep saying that that if we are angry at the illegal Mexicans we are racist? Sorry but I'm am angry at ALL illegals, because they are ILLEGAL!

I don't think it's your job to check them, unless you are want to give them a job.

No. Because Mexican is a nationality - like American.

But I think that in daily life, there should be things that one has to prove legal residence in this nation. Like renting a home, obtaining a driver's license, getting a bank account, credit cards, etc. If you can't do that, then you should be deported.

If you are specifically targeting Mexicans or Hispanics than yes of course it is. This sort of thing leads to harassment of minorities and of legal US citizens of Mexican or Hispanic decent.

Besides, I'm a US citizen and I'd find it intrusive if I had to prove that I am here legally to everyone.

That is very racist. There are some Mexicans who are here legally and it is not fair to check all of us. That would be unfair harassment and I would sue.

Yes, we can check everyone, but not one class or race of people

Of course it is not. It is called "Protecting America" from the illegal immigration crisis!!

If you are here legally and a Mexican, then you don't have anything to worry about do you??
