Hate to tell you, but the rails on the king sized frame are more than likely at the outer edges of the frame, so I hope you didn't just buzzzzz them off. LOL When you put your slats in you are just going to have that gap on the sides of the mattress..... I know, because I did something similar once. Wouldn't suggest it. I finally got a mattress to fit, because it is just irritating when it slides around. However if you are stuck with it, try sliding the frame close to the wall, then roll up a blanket or something to keep the mattress pushed out where you want it. Hard to make the bed though... If you don't already have that queen mattress, I wouldn't do it. However if you are stuck on queen, why don't you resell that frame, and look for a queen-sized deal, or just a bed frame that will match or look good with the rest of the set?

A Wood shop guy should be able to do it for you. A lot of the Antique beds are going from doubles or off sizes to Kings, and they manage that. So I know it can be done. But that is
pretty expensive. Check with a carpenter first. You are ahead
of the game because you have More wood not Less.

It so depends on the detailing on the headboard. Sometimes there is no clear way to cut it without it always looking strange. Check with a pro but it sounds like it may cost you more to try to salvage it than to buy new.
