Atheists, What do you really think when someone says they are a Christian? What are some of the things that pop into your head?

(lets try not to be rude)

When a person tells me they're a Christian, it immediately tells me two things:

1. They want to do the right thing, and be a good person.

2. They don't know very much about Christianity.

i think everyone has a right to believe in what they wish to believe in. if this brings them comfort and joy then so bit it. christian's are not the only people who believe in god there are other religions as well. and there is the after life beleif also. i feel that people who judge someone on there spiritual beliefs needs to look closer at them selfs and see where they need to adjust there own life's as to not judge others. when someone says to me that they are a christian a catholic or what ever they choose i believe that is there choose. me myself i am a spiritual person, who has seen and believe in the afer life. and i have many different be;iefs of all different types of religion. take what you feel comfortable with and leave the rest behind but dont judge one for there own beliefs no one is write or wrong.

I say show me where was God when terrible things happened to you. The more bad things that happen in my life the more I don't belive in God. I try to treat people like I would wanna be treated. Im not mean to anyone and I see good in everyone first. So maybe I have some christian ethics but I don't belive. God in our modern world seems kinda far fetched don't you think.

Fine, I'll try not to be rude. Well, depends. If they just say "Yeah, I believe in God and yeah, hey how about the weather?" Then I honestly couldn't care less that they're Christian. However, if they use the term 'Jesus" at least 8 times in a sentence and talk about saving me, then I'm a tad worried and try to keep my distance.

i'm an buddhist spiritually but atheist in everyday life. my best friend in the world is a born again fundamentalist christian. the reason we are best friends is because we were best friends before religion became important in our lives. that's what really matters, we may not agree on both religion and politics, but we have so much love and respect for one another. there are no labels between us. being a good human being is all that matters.

When someone's conspicuous about being a Christian I usually put him in the same mental file folder as someone who's conspicuous about being a patriot, or an athiest.

The folder has a label, "Not worth further attention"

Depends on the context.

If we were already talking about religion, I probably wouldn't react much. After all, most people in this country are Christian, even though most of them aren't so bad.

However, I get suspicious whenever someone injects Christianity into a conversation about other things.

I honestly don't dislike anyone just because they believe in a certain religion. I disagree, but I don't dislike the person. The problem comes when they start pushing their beliefs on me - don't try and tell me that homosexuality is wrong, don't try to tell me that abortion is murder, don't try to tell me that god created us, don't try to tell me that I need to repent and be saved, etc. If I want their opinions, I will ask.

I think, "What can I do to avoid talking about religion with this person, how can I steer the conversation away from religion, and if they tell me I need to find Jesus one more time I'm going to unload with both barrels of logic and reason and shred their silly religion to pieces and send them home with more doubt that they have ever even thought existed in the entire world."
I've actually done that and had the door to door bible thumper quit his church and take up the study of the scientific method.
