because most ppl are taught that it is rude to speak up and say something . I get upset and then I speak up and my hubby was not raised this way and he gets upset and says that is rude . I am thinking that most of the general public feels this way too . good luck .

For the most part, a lot of people confuse "being honest" with "being an asshole". As a result, of a huge lack of tact, honesty is often seen as being rude. There is a huge different between comments like, "baby you look fat in those pants" and "baby, I think another pair of pants would look better on you".

Other's are also insecure with themselves, and have a hard time going against the status quo. Things like peer pressure, and following the path of least resistance, still apply when we are adults.

Some people are naturally shy, and reserved, and may only really speak out when very bothered, or among intimate friends and family.

If you mean it in a more political/moral light, some people just don't take an interest outside their own lives and sphere of influence. They are working all day, to put food on the table, and don't have the time, energy or interest to protest the education system, or tax hikes, or political agendas. I hear apathy is the new black...

We are a fearful nation, based on puritan mentality. Plus our government, atleast the current administration, doesn't want to tolerate freedom. When people secure their wealth, or secure their happiness --even by screwing people over, such as political and corporate crooks--for you to question that jepordizes their wealth, and with their power, they will not allow such a thing to occur. Also, humans by nature are like lambs, and dont speak up because they follow the leader naturally, like most people in the United States have been conditioned to do.

Because not everything that we can say because we have Freedom of Speech is appropriate. IE: Racist comments/generalizations etc.
It's more polite to keep some "subjective" opinions to yourself. so as to avoid conflict.
