I'm with you on this, Reallyfedup, I'm with you.
I also "get it" about informal dress being OK in certain venues, especially the fast food and chain places. But the fact of the matter is that it shows up as well in finer dining estblaishments which you choose precisely BECAUSE you want ambience that supports the gustatory past-time, right? Right.
SOME places actually do post a restriction: "No shorts or tank tops permitted," for example. Our job? FIND those places. But many have caved in to the changing preference for "casual dress," so they don't lose business.
The situation is no more evident than on cruise ships. There was a time (I know because I was often there) when dinner on board ALWAYS meant a jacket and tie for men, a dress and wrap of some kind for ladies. "Formal nights" -and there were usually 2, not 1- meant just that: tux, eveningware. Not the day-glo sports jacket and string tie with tennis shoes you see these days. God forbid.
People, alas, not only don't see how nasty they look, many DO see and don't care. On the one hand they demand access to the finer things; then on the other they ruin it by their appearance. Same thing with their cretinous and flithy children, running around, yelling, looking at me over the backs of their chairs, snotty noses on display. I think I've found a cruise line where decorum and dress are still expected, but I'm NOT going to say which one for fear the great unwashed will soon be trundling up the gangway like an army of deformed imbeciles whose sole mission is to spread ugly appearance and behavior among us who are paying for something more than that.
Meanwhile -I just look the other way when some person with flies buzzing aound his arm pits and legs that look like a New York street map walks in.
Maybe I should point and yell, "Gross!"
Maybe not.
Have a nice day.

I am pretty sure it's the same every where so if you are eating in a high class restaurant then some dressed like that would no be allowed to eat there not fitting in with the dress code. But if you eat any where you have to deal with the public.
I go out in shorts and if I am hungry I will go to a restaurant like that and who does not like it oh well don't look at me. But I won't go to a four star restaurant in Shorts. I know better but you act like you want a lunch special and want special treatment at the same time.
I have been to lunches where we spend over 200 dollars and I will go dress very well but then if I go in shorts I most likely won't spend more than 30 so pick your places well

It would have to depend on the time of year and the restaurant for me. If it the middle of summer and at a casual restaurant, it doesn't bother me at all to see some one in shorts. Now, if it's starting to get chilly outside and someone walks into something like a Red Lobster wearing shorts, I'd agree that they probably shouldn't be wearing them, but what they wear is their prerogative and I'm not entitled to tell them what to wear.

You're on a tear today, I see!
It depends on the restaurant, but I expect to find shorts at almost all restaurants (especially the ones I can afford) in the summer. It's entertainment: if the woman has nice legs, then I get to admire them and engage in wishful thinking, and if she has fatty legs, I get to be appalled and feel superior.

Okay. I'll go with you on the big gauzy bloody leg. But seriously...do the rest of us a favor and stay home and eat if we offend you with our shorts. I live in Arizona and it's damn hot here. Why would I put pants on to go to TGI Fridays in 110 degree weather? Be happy this is the worst problem in your life. Casual is acceptable for casual restaurants. Where do you dine?

the dress code is lax to allow such appalling attire. Simply don't patronize that establishment, go to the proper restaurant that require suit and tie

Well if it bothers you that much then dont look. I dont know why someone wears shorts to a restaurant. I suppose it depends on what kind of restaurant.
Some people just dont know any better I guess.

If it's a casual restaurant then I don't see the problem. It sounds like you would be fine with it if it was an attractive person doing it.

It seems to me like you worry too much about what other people are doing. Are you unhappy? Maybe if you focus a bit on yourself, you would get a different perspective on life.
