"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." - Sir Stephen Henry Roberts (1901-1971)

Any comments?

(P.S. Thanks to Lina-chan for this quote)

I have no problem if you don't believe in my God, however my reasons for dismissing other religions are not for the same reasons that atheists deny all religions. I believe that there is a certain level of spiritual power in which God asserts his being. The Christian church in just over two thousand years has created, and sustained one of the most influential, and powerful religions on the face of the earth. There seems to be a divine intervention, or Gods' will that has propelled Christianity to such success. And also I prefer the teachings of Christianity over that of other religions, such as: having one life (not being reincarnated), pacifism, and love for ones neighbor. And of course I truly believe God is the only true god.

Sir I pose to you this question...how can you look at the stars at night or the mountians or animals or even the birth of a child and claim there is no GOD? How can you be comfortable with the idea that you are made from some slime and your relative is a animal that God gave you charge of...God holds you much higher than that...I sir am not an Atheist and boldly am proclaiming that I belive in "I AM"

Bit of rhetorical logic. It sounds good, as a soundbite. Since God is infinite there is a huge difference between a monotheist and a nulltheist view.

But I know God exists .. atheists seem amazingly blind to me, weirdly and vehemently convinced they can see. There's no real hope for the atheist anyway .. just a short life, in which happiness is not guaranteed even for the rich, clever and beautiful .. you people should seek God while you can.

Nope, not 'almost' an atheist. Not even close. In saying that you "believe in one fewer god than" I do.....that rather sounds like you do believe in 'gods'....would you mind telling me who they are?

And I don't have to have someone tell me why you dismiss God. I already know.

"God exists whether or not men may choose to believe in Him. The reason why many people do not believe in God is not so much that it is intellectually impossible to believe in God, but because belief in God forces that thoughtful person to face the fact that he is accountable to such a God. "

Even though this is a question for the Christians, it seems like the Atheists are wrongfully represented.

Atheists don't take "pride" in their knowledge nor do they worship themselves. It's the religious folk who are self-centered because their belief is that God, if there is one, is concerned with their life. For any immortal God, a lifespan of 70-80 years is like a minuscule moment in the history of time. Out of the 14 billion years that the universe has existed, believers really think that their life is that important? Wow, that is self-centered. Moreover, certain believers believe that they have accomplished the goal of knowing all there is to know. Which is ONLY their religion. That is also self-centered. Moreover, Christians believe that this god sent his "son" or whatever so THEY personally wouldn't have to go to hell simply for believing in the said "son". So, this person sacrificed himself ESPECIALLY for them. That is ALSO self-centered.

It's amazing how Christians can't seem to see the amazing genius in S. H. Roberts' saying. You don't believe in Thor, Zeus, Jupiter, Ram, Allah, or any god that ever has been worshiped except your own and you can't understand that the atheist is doing the EXACT same as you are when he/she rejects your "god." My god! That *is* self-centered.

No, you are not almost atheist. You are almost retarded.

Theological complications aside, most Christians believe in lots of characters that would be considered gods in most religions, including Yahweh, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Satan, Mary, Moses, Elijah, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and the Apostles. Some are portrayed in the religion as more godlike than others.

Why are quotes made by someone valued? Yes some may seem to be a clever collection of words which one may deem appropriate to substantiate ones point of view; but in reality they have no merit. They are the empty words of men. The bible is the word of God. God is a personal experience.

I think the difference between the two is:

Christians understand that they do not know everything and have learned to seek this knowledge with humility because they recognize that there is a greater power than them.

Athiests understand that they do not know everything and have learned to seek this knowledge (with pride) from others who are just like themselves and limited in knowledge.

The end result is Christians believe in a all-powerfull God who wants them to be more other-sentered; while the Athiests believe there is nothing more powerful than themselves, making themselves their own god and being more self-centered.

This quote demonstrates the BIG DIFFERENCE in
"knowing" about God and "commiting" your life and having a personal relationship with Him. It's also like "knowing" how beautiful Alaska is and then "experiencing" the beauty of Alaska. So your question "Christians, are you almost Atheists?" is absurd. The answer of "you mean 'almost' being pregnant?" is as close to a perfect answer to your question as any.

Yes, I have a comment but it probably belongs in elementary math instead of here. 1 - 1 = 0. That is not "one less" it is NONE.
We "dismiss all the other possible gods" because they do not qualify. Who are they anyway? Besides, it is illogical for their to be more than one Supreme Being. Get it? Supreme means above all others.
