In the US, there are 4 grades in high school. In Japan, there are only 3 years in high school. This causes some translation problems.
In the US, it is 9th grade freshmen, 10th grade sophomores, 11th grade juniors, and 12th grade seniors for high schools.
Universities use the same system, but it is not done by year, but by the amount of credits the student has completed. We also don't say "grade" for university.
For Japanese High school, you could say 1st year freshmen, 2nd year could be either sophomores or juniors, 3rd year seniors.

9th grade = Freshman (if it is a 4 year HS)
10th = Sophmore
11th = Junior
12th = Senior

Yes, it's just as you described. Unless you have a junior high, freshman would be 9th grade.

When you first get into high school, you're a freshman, in night grade. You're second year in high school is when you become a sophomore, in tenth grade. you're third year is when you're a junior, eleventh grade. your last year is when you're a senior, twelth grade.
