Alarm is armed/disarmed by a switch fitted to the front door locks. lock to arm - unlock to disarm.

Probable cause is wear on the switch which is plastic.

Drivers door is usual culprit as that lock gets used the most so more wear on switch.

Sometimes you can disarm by unlocking from passenger side.

If doing that works it confirms drivers door switch faulty. You can replace them yourself but a bit fiddly.

With regard to the suggestion that you cut the wires. What is the purpose of having an alarm if it does not work?

I had the exact same thing happen to my Rover 220. We took it into the garage and they couldn't find anything wrong with it so in the end we just disconnected the amplifier so it still goes off now and again but you can't hear anything, the hazard lights just flash on and off and it eventually resets itself. Who needs an alarm anyway? Nobody takes any notice if it goes off apart from to complain about the noise!
