Well, I know several people that don't have green cards and the men usually work construction; manual labor. The women usually work cleaning houses on their own-for this you usually need a car and to speak at least a little bit of English. I hope this helps. Corporate jobs, i.e. offices, usually ask for green cards. Also, many supermarkets and businesses.

Completion of an I-9 is required for all employees. Green card is only one of the documents you may accept as proof of employment eligibility. A driver license and a social security card is usually good enough. See the form for details.
You do not need to complete an I-9 for contractors.

To get paid you need a SSN, to get a decent job you need a SSN - you don't get one of these if you are illegal. A decent employer will not risk getting huge fines from his state etc to employ an illegal immigrant.

I don't think that there are any employers that don't ask for these documents. I think that there are a lot that don't VERIFY such documents, which is completely different.
