You were misinformed. Disposable soft contacts are available up to -15.00, non disposable soft to -20.00, custom soft to any power and rigid lenses to any power. At age 50 you will either need reading glasses over them or bifocal contacts.

LASIK usually works with -5.00 but you will still need reading glasses. And the surgeon likes your prescription to be stable. Whether or not you are a candidate for LASIK depends upon a number of individual factors besides prescription; you will need to be assessed by a laser surgeon to answer that question.

Most disposable contact lenses run to at least -10.00!

-26.00 is the highest I have ever personally ordered up in contact lenses.
Contact lenses can be fitted to people with way too much myopia for conventional corrective surgery (there are alternate techniques for severe myopes, that's a separate issue!)

Unusual corneal curvatures, or astigmatism, possibly, but five dioptres of myopia just isn't that exceptional.
(I'm up to -10.50 in my left eye, with another -3.00 of astigmatism, and I've had contact lenses.)

Some mis-communication has occurred, at the very least.

You can improve your eyesight by simply learning, naturally and practicing the correct way to see for a few small minutes a day.
You can check this method based on a scientific researches :

if glasses are worn continuously over time the poor vision will generally become worse. Essentially what glasses do is lock the eyes into their refractive state and in order to see through your lenses you have to maintain the poor vision that the lenses are designed to correct.
"Restore my vision” program you'll be taken by the hand, it shows you how to improve your vision naturally, permanent and complete solution.
Even the American Optometric Association has been forced to admit these things!
I'm sure that you will not regret your decision

I don't think your prescription is too high, but you might be too old for the surgery to work well, since at 50, your eyes are probably just going down hill. Your prescription needs to be stable before you go to surgery. You should be able to get contact lenses if -5.00 is the only problem. If you have any other problems, then you might not be an ideal candidate. You need to go back to your optometrist to get more details.

My eyes are - 10.00 Astigmatism is the problem with contacts. Never could wear them comfortably. Was told I was not a good candidate for laser. Because of my age. Older than you
Good Luck
