So, today I open my email, and Ive got a nice message from an unnamed beleiver... I had responded yesterday to a posting and told the person that they needed to read a dictionary, not the Bible, due to their horrible lack of spelling and grammar skills. Today, I received the following message from another responder (verbatim, grammar and all):

"you dont need to tell other peps they dont need to read the bible they need the holy word and so do you they shall no lie"

So, am I to understand that I am NOT to tell others that they dont need to read the Bible, but its okay for a believer to tell others that they NEED TO read the Bible? Anyone else note the irony in that?!?!

And, is this what a hypocrite is???

rogavit - wrong. I said that they need to read a dictionary instead of the Bible. Never said NOT to read the bible, just to read a dictionary first!

that would be a double standard. a hypocrite is one who preaches againist the very thing they do. like one says you shouldnt do hate email then they turn right around and do hate email.

That would be a hypocrite. Someone who judges others for doing something they believe to be wrong and then they themselves turn around and do the very exact thing. Of course maybe they were raised in one of those family's where the parents used the phrase "do as I say, not as I do".

I believe I know the person you're talking about. Every time it speaks it's an assault on the English language in general and human intelligence in particular. If I were a believer I would pay people like this to stay home.

I feel people who get on the religion and spirtuality page need to act less hostile towards others.

We need to get our panties out of the bunch, and stop worrying about one comment someone makes.

If you believe what you believe so be it.
They are entitled to theirs as well.

God is winning people over everyday.

But this hostility from people needs to go.

I dont care if you are a believer or not, we need to treat each other with common decency.

Hypocrisy: The practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform

So yes, the person is a hypocrite.

That does seem to be the case, tell a Christian to read something else, they get mad, yet they can tell whoever they want to read a Bible...that my friend, is hypocrisy.

Unfortuanately, Christianity like any other belief, has it's share of hypocrites. How is that an indictment on the belief? Christians if they are true to their faith, understand that we all are flawed and sinful, we just realize Jesus saves us from that sin as long as we are accountable for it. Don't judge Christianity by Christians, judge it by Christ's example.

Well, you said they dont need to read the bible. And the Christian says that they do.

I'm not seeing any hypocrisy or irony in there, apologies if I've missed it..

hypocrite

a person who professes beliefs and opinions that he or she does not hold in order to conceal his or her real feelings or motives

According to the definition of the word, this person wouldn't be a "hypocrite", at least not for making that comment. Perhaps "opinionated" would be a better word choice.

Hard to tell. I always thought one needed to understand and then not do to be a hypocrite, and that person clearly doesn't understand.
