Also, is it a good idea to purchase an engagement ring from the jewelry stores in the mall?

All girls think they are getting a 10k ring when the ring is actually $3,000. If the ring is pretty and you think it is something she would like, get the ring no matter if you think it's cheap or not. Got to Zales or Kay, the girls there will help you out:

The jewelry industry that makes money off engagement rings says 3 months salary for an engagement ring. Do not go by this. This is purely marketing to squeeze couples.

Buy what both you and your fiance like. If that can be found in a mall jewelry store, why not. Mine came from there.

Look for conflict-free stones.

You should pay as much as you're comfortable spending. It could be $500 or $5,000, it's up to you. I don't see what's wrong with buying a ring at a mall jewelry store - big malls usually have several jewelry stores in them, and you can shop around. My husband and I went to the mall to get the engagement ring, and then we went back to the same jeweler to pick out our wedding bands.

I'd say get her what makes her happy. I just recently got my fiancee a ring well outside of my budget, but it's a special things for her that will hopefully only happen once in her life. So I wanted to make the moment as special as possible. And if you're going to buy a ring from a jewelry store in a mall make sure it's one that is well known and not those crappy ones that bargain on the price. I say that cause I work in a jewelery store in a mall ( a good one).

My husband-to-be got me an amazing ring from Zales and it cost him about $700 including insurance on the band and the stones. By some standards this is cheap I guess, but to me that seems like a lot of money and I would have been happy with anything. The fact that he picked it out and gave it to me means SOOO much more than the price tag.

Don't look at the price, just find a ring you think she will like and if it is within your budget buy it! Don't spend more than you can afford -- you are going to need money for your wedding! And don't be afraid to spend "too little" -- it shouldn't matter!

Wherever you buy the ring make sure it is a big chain that is reputable and not likely to go out of business. I know people who have spent big bucks on jewelry from local places, and then have stones fall out repeatedly...

The jewelry stores in the mall are fine, if it's Kay, Zales, Gordons, etc. Not those little independent shops. It doesn't matter how much you make a year, how much do you WANT to spend? How extravagant of a ring does she want? My ring was $2000 and my boyfriend wasn't too far behind you.

The whole "you should spend so much of your yearly salary" thing is just marketing.

Take your lady out and see what styles she prefers or ask her if there is a certain shape or style she likes.

Figure out what you can reasonably afford. Once you have that amount in mind, go to the jewelers and ask to see things in that price range. The larger mall stores are fine. Don't let the salespeople pressure you. I would recommend going to several stores, but waiting to purchase something until you've had time to think on it.

Good luck!

Spend what you can afford. This may sounds like a bad answer, but this is such an individual situation.

As far as where to get one, privately owned store can be more expensive or less depending. But we decided to go with a chain (Jared's) because my job requires us to move around and I wanted to know if anything ever happened to my ring a store would be close by. I take it in every 6 months to have it cleaned and checked for free since we paid for the insurance. They have been wonderful.

Good luck and congrats.

Malls have excellent jewelry stores. Zales, Kay, are excellent places to shop.

I would only spend what you can afford without making payments or going into debt or taking out a loan or using a credit card.

DON'T start off by being in debt!

I wouldn't so much have a price in mind just yet. Take your girlfriend and do it together - this is what my hubby did one month after we started dating. He ended up finding the perfect engagement ring for me and I loved it - and the price became no object. Do not go to stores in the mall, look for reputable places of good quality. And keep in mind, for a 1 carat solitaire that is of decent clarity, it will cost you $4,000 to start. Now my ring is combined with my wedding band for a total of 18 diamonds, totaling over 2 carats, with a 1 carat center round diamond. All diamonds are round and channel set.

Spend no more than you can comfortably afford. I know that some folks say that you should spend 3 month's salary on a ring, but I would think that my guy had lost his mind if he did that :-) You can get a simple, elegant ring that she will be pleased to wear for between $1000 and $2000.
