Why stars at all? A lot of people in the civil organizations like police and fire are pretending to be something else. Our sheriff wears a plain tan shirt with the only indication that he is the sheriff being that it says so on his shield.

Way too much play-pretend in civil law enforcement. Goes with the drift into a police-state.

Police organizations are quasi-military but don't have the same exact ranking designs/designations.

Pogo, as far as Police pretending to be military, see above explanation and learn a little police history. The uniform coloring and style was the same as the Union Army during the civil war. Many major cities used those uniforms starting after the Civil war and many veterans ( alot of Irish) went back to their home cities and were already familiar with this " ranking system".

Other than ranks such as Sgt. Lt. Major and sometimes Corp. that's about where the designations end. Having said that, I have seen about 10 Chiefs on my old department alone, that ran right out and got all the gold and scrambled eggs they could for their " dress " uniform. Very few of those men had any military background.

5 Star General Uniform

county sheriffs can make up any uniform they want and rank structure they want. in my department they both have changed with the past 3 sheriffs. as for 5 star generals the u.s. does still use them when the president sees fit in a time of war. we just havent a major war like wwi, wwii, korea or veitnam in the past 30 years. so there has been no need for one. 5 general stars are appointed by the president

Police rank insignia is not the same as military. And we don't have 5 star generals anymore.

To clarify again. 5 stars has been removed from the possible ranks in recent years. If you look at modern rank charts 5 stars is nowhere to be seen as it is thought that a 5 star General has too much power ie General MacArthur who defied the president and went into china during korea.

It is just window dressing. Many police chiefs, sheriffs, and high ranking police official like to jazz up their looks, in order to feel more important than they actually are.
