In golf there may be a hole determined to be a par 5. That means if you get the ball in the hole in five hit(strokes) you receive a par. If you get it in in 4, its a birdie. If you go over 5 strokes it is a bogey. 7 strokes double bogey and so on.

What's up girl, lets play one day and I can show you. Where you play at? Bogey is swinging one shot over par. Meaning if a hole is a par 3, it means that the average player takes 3 swings to score a 3, when you get a score of 4 it is a bogey.

Most of the answers here are correct in the current usage of the term "bogey". However, bogey was originally closer to what we currently think of a "par". Which is why the Bogey Competition (match play) format is called that, instead of something else. Par originally never really applied to a specific hole, just the total score.

Most everyone has answered you what a bogey is. The term came about from a ghost player (invisible golfer)...Colonel Bogey. If 3 men were playing and they were playing a 4 man game then Colonel Bogey will fill in the scores of the 4th man 1 stroke over par.
On many of the more popular courses a foursome was required to play and infamous ghost player Colonel Bogey often came to the rescue.

If the score on a hole is supposed to be 3 and you sink the ball in 4, that is a bogey
If it takes you 5 shots, that is a double bogey.

a bogey is basically the average score for amateurs who play this fine game of golf - if a certain hole has a Par of 4 which is considered the expected score for that hole (no reward but no penalty) and the golfer needs 5 strokes to complete the hole, they are one over the Par of 4 which is what a bogey is - one over the expected number of strokes
