The book I'd recommend is called "Feeling Good - The New Mood Therapy". At the bottom of the front page it says "The Clinically Proven Drug-free Treatment for Depression. It's divided into sections - for instance, Prevention and Personal Growth - Defeating Hopelessness and Suicide - Coping with the Stresses and Strains of Daily Living. There are various exercises to do so it's quite a pro-active book (if that's the right phrase). I hope it works for you.

Well, if you have any idea of the source of your depression this is a good start and I certainly support you in your want to stay of of drugs. Good for you and this is a good start in the right direction because you really do want help. I am unsure of what books in particular are going to help you especially since I dont know what type of depression you are trying to deal with. However, if you go to Barns and Noble they have a huge self help section with alot of books on depression and alot of them help with singling out a certain cause to help you treat it. I sugest you give yourself an afternoon, go to the store and pull all the books relevant to you off the shelf. Sit down and read through the first few pages of the ones you picked up and find on that seems to hit home for you. Good luck hun, I hope you find the answers you need and get well soon. :)

In my opinion you can not cure or control depression by yourself.Medications ,whether herbal or prescription are an aid. However you must also treat the cause of your depression.I am not a professional, but I know someone who has walked away from his family because he is "treating " himself. He has been in denial ,has never sought out counselling, just masked his symptoms with meds. I do believe meds help you regain conrol of your life but I think you need to address the cause of the depression. See your family doctor who can refer you to someone. Take care.

Try some St. John's Wart - it's awfully smelly, but effective. And, if you're not already exercising regularly be sure to add some form of daily exercise to your routine!
