But of course! You need to do it at least once a day! If you've ever flossed (and I assume you have), you have actually SEEN the need for it. :) Brushing just doesn't reach those places!
EDIT: LOL to the person below who believes that that the "plaque" on your teeth is the same "plaque" that can clog your arteries! Who is this dentist who told you this??? I hope he was kidding!!!
Brownsugar, I believe the answer was referring to an "atherosclerotic plaque" which is a completely different thing from plaque on your teeth. The heart infection that you are referring to is probably "endocarditis" which comes from bacteria in your mouth that enters the bloodstream and causes a valve infection. It is also the bacteria that enters the blood stream (not the plaque) that has been "linked" to heart attacks...

It only hurts because you hardly ever do it. If you floss for two weeks straight and keep at it, I promise you it won't hurt anymore.
By the way, if your mom washed the dishes and didn't clean the spaces in between the forks and they were covered in crusted up dirt, would you eat with it?
Well if you said that's disgusting, not flossing is the same thing.
And that's not even mentioning the damage you are doing to your teeth and your body.

I read in an article that if you floss daily you can add one extra year to your life. My husband asked his dentist and they said it's true because dental disease can get really bad and lead to other worse infections. I figure it's worth doing if it makes my life longer. If you do it every day, it doesn't hurt as much and my gums never bleed now when I floss. I find that the Glide floss works the best and hurts the least.

It hurts b/c you don't do it enough! You will be singing a different tune when your teeth are rotting out and you have a drill going into your mouth for a route canal. START FLOSSING

It probably hurts because your gums aren't used to you doing it all the time. I try to floss, I just don't remember all the time.

I floss three times a day every single day, and if you think it is stupid, and aren't doing it, you will end up with gum disease and probably dentures by the time you are thirty.

People who don't floss are MORONS.
It hurts because you don't do it everyday. Do it twice a day and it won't hurt. Man, I don't want to be near you with your nasty mouth. You must be really young---you think your teeth will never have problems.
You'll see.

Yup, unfortunately, yes, absolutely. Everybody flosses.
If you look at teeth and the way they are arranged in mouth, there is no other way to clean them.

Not often, but I think it's a good idea.
In response to QNA: I vaguely remember something about this....isn't it that when tooth plaque enters the blood stream through bleeding gums it can cause an infection that could lead to a heart attack?
