frame around the duct work, dont physicaly attach to it and leave enough space for small movent that the duct will have from heating and cooling. You can use wood or metal studs. Make shure you use a square and a good level as if it's out at all the eye will pick it out quickly. I would insulate to cut down teh sound.

We drywalled around it so it looked like a beam. We chose not to do a drop ceiling because it would just be too low. The ductwork runs down the middle of our basement along with those support poles. We made big square columns around the poles the same width as around the ductwork and put floor to ceiling cabinets flush depth to the columns between the columns to create a wall. It just made sense because where the ductwork was covered it was really too low to stand under. We kept the most height with the rest of the ceiling by placing the drywall on the ceiling joist. We have lots of storage now.

When we finished our basement, we framed around it w/ 2x4s, but we flat framed instead of standing framed. Meaning that we used the 2, not the 4. Form a box to mount the drywall. Make sure when using screws to mount the drywall that you use a screw short enough that it doesn't go through the framing into the ductwork. For lack of a better term, use a ladder design for the framing. This keeps it stable and gives you plenty of mounting areas for the drywall.

I can't tell you how to do it but why don't you try to cover it to make it look like a beam? Maybe some one on here can help with details or lumber store?

We had ours framed and sheetrocked or you could choose to do a drop ceiling so you would have access if necessary.
