They're afraid that God is going to use them and challenge them to change their life. At least that's the reason why I often avoid things.

I believe it is a result of how our churches are structured. Right now, there is a big "authority" move in the church---we have to "respect" this authority and that authority, and because so and so has authority they get to make all the decisions etc. Which had resulted in churches that look to the requirements of authority and not the freedom of love.
Since only those with "authority" are able to contribute, the church can only respond to the vision of those select ones. Which means church activities are created only as a result of the vision of a select few. And even within those select activities, people don't get the "ownership" feeling that comes from being able to give fully in response to needs they see. (It also makes activities void since gifts in the church are a response to needs in the church---what a church can't see it can't respond to.)
Frankly, somewhere along the line we've forgotten that the church IS the Body of Christ, and doesn't belong to anyone----rather it IS all of us.
And, continuing my rant, until we truly follow the instructions in Ephesians and give honor to the least "honorable" and start valuing the input of all believers, we're never grow up to maturity in Christ......let alone have people show up to the nicely organized activities churches like.
Sooo, to answer your question, its because we're not following Scripture.
...oh, and lots of folks have gotten stomped on by the church and just don't trust us anymore.

Perhaps because some feel that attending church is primarily for worship, not socialization. Not everyone is comfortable with jumping into every activity that comes along.

There are always those who just love to hear their own voice- glory seekers,so many are put off from supporting these groups, there can be pleasant activities of course, but one becomes a bit wary and drift away.

There are millions of Christians going to church and paying tithes diligently thinking they are buying their way into heaven. They do what is required and don't need the fellowship.
Many will call my name but I say I did not know you.
Works won't get you there. This to me is the Apostasy.
God Bless!

Kenny,
There are a number of people who just want to stay in Cliques and keep away from people altogether. Have a nice weekend.
Thanks,

The most obvious answer is probably the most truthful. Many people are fire insurance Christians, they want to be able to get into Heaven, but not to be inconvenienced here on earth. They are believers but have not made the step into true DISCIPLESHIP.

You are not correct and very wrong. Why do we avoid religious gathering. We like it, my friend.

Because there is a committee of persons to org anise, to allow them to do their best, others should not interfere.

most churches, like other social groups, are divided into cliques. if someone doesn't feel like a part of the group, they will voluntarily exclude themselves.
