I heard that in Europe they do not use hormones in their foods, that y they are smaller than us. My neighbor an Italian Immigrant came to this country 40 years ago, he worked in a pork store one time and he put it gallons of water and preservative mix to the pork when they made it. Now all he does it make his own sausage. He swears he will never eat store bought sausage or meats again

Do hormones. genetic alteration, antibotics ,and preservatives used in American Meat make American bigger?

Well maybe. But the bulk of why Americans are bigger is due to the massive increace in calorie intake we have. Prosperity and gluttony are the prime reason we are bigger.

A japanese guy eating a "traditional" meal in japan like fish and rice is eating fewer calories, and less fattening foods.

200 years ago even caucasians were 1 foot smaller on average.

Genetics and diet primarily make us fat, tall or big---and most Americans have European genetics and food traditions/culture!

Also, we are one of the least homogeneous cultures in the world, so the genetics of whoever made us come into play---not just the genetics of people just like one another, who are all generally small, or all skinny or are all built and look a certain way...

It is true that some EU countries prohibit Genetically Modified (GM) foods and hormone-added foods to be sold there. It is not true that such foods are not found there and not eaten there.

I was just there and so-called healthy soy is in everything---and soy makes what it's used in a hormone-laden food full of pumped-up hormones.

It is not true that all US foods are GM or hormone- added foods. And here, the labels must say exactly what is in the food we eat.

In Europe and many other places, labels are incomplete, do not exist at all or "fudge" the truth about what the product is made of.

It is true that most US people eat too much fatty food--but it is probably the lack of adequate exercise, along with genetics and eating such food that are the REAL culprits and causes of our "bigness".

As to whether they use hormones on the animals, couldn't tell you. But, with the exception of HGH, hormones don't make you bigger...they have other effects - so one young 9 year old from Brasil can tell you (back in the 80's, Brasilian ranchers used so much hormone, that girls as young as this one 9 year old entered puberty years early!)...

If you mean height... Couldn't tell you, but I'm pretty sure the average height in Europe is about the same as here in North America.

If you mean girth...no, that's just stupidity and laziness. People are fat because they eat too much, and most of it is the wrong stuff in the first place!

If you're talking about how your old guy neighbour is shorter than young strapping you...old people shrink as they age. Has to do with calcium loss and compaction of the joints of the spine and such.

EDIT: As to why "modern" man is taller than his counterparts in past times...*better* diet...eat more and regularily, grow more.

Sounds like somebody's been listening to Kevin Trudeu's thory. Growth hormones in the beef making children hit puberty faster, as well as getting fatter. Sounds logical, but I doubt that is the real cause.

When you see Asian, Central American and other immigrants in the USA out with their children the children are always way taller than their parents and have a better overall physique. I don't know why this is but I have always noticed this. They usually look healthier and have better teeth than their parents too.
I guess it could be hormones have made them a bigger version of their parents.

You know I believe that - but not big as in tall, I mean big as in FAT. The US meat industry pumps up the beef so much that I am sure that America's obesity problem is due to the hormones in the food.
