Yesterday, the following was posted in a question

"Did you hear that Muslims in Dearborn Michigan were celebrating the bridge collapse in Minneapolis?"

In response, two people (Damon and Indiana Raven) answered with "it wouldn't surpirse me."

As somebody who lived in Detroit for about 2.5 years, and knows a few Muslims from Dearborn, my gut told me that there was no merit to the original claim. And here we are, a day later, and there is still nothing on the newswires indicating that this might be true.

So my question is whether or not people who make such racist assumptions about others ever go back and check the validity of their assumptions? And if so, do they ever apologize?

Jack, where's your proof that ANY muslims are happy about it?

I've lived in both Pittsburgh and Detroit.

OK, you are right. Racist is the wrong word. Bigoted is more accurate.

Airmech,

Neither can you count on opinion as proof of anything. In fact, I'll take the news media over somebody's random opinion.

No, they don't check the validity.
No, I do not expect there will be an apology issued. . .just another way to spread rumors and hate. . . .w/o even thinking how powerful words are.

They probably just made it up and picked some random geographical city they thought no one would be from.

News flash guys, I don't live that far from Dearborn and as an avid follower of international, national, and local news I have heard nothing about this.

It's amazing how people can make sometime up randomly and most will just accept it as fact, not bothering to check its veracity.

I'm afraid I have to be devil's advocate here. I'm no fan of bigotry or stereotyping. But I might very well have answered your question the same way Damon and Indiana Raven did. Why? Because nearly every evening when I watch CNN, I see film of Muslims committing acts of barbarism and violence. Beheading civilian captives. Burning people in effigy. Or celebrating a successful terrorist attack. Frequently when I drive to and from work, I hear news stories on NPR of Muslim terrorists killing American soldiers and dragging their bodies through the streets. Or killing dozens of civilians in a suicide bombing. All this in the name of the Islamic faith.
Now Damon and Indiana Raven didn't say that all Muslims were celebrating those deaths. They merely indicated that they wouldn't be surprised to learn that some of them were. And given that we all regularly see footage of exactly that happening, I think that's a perfectly reasonable and justified reaction.
And I think that many of the people responding to THIS question aren't being very honest with themselves.

Irregardless of the subject matter, you'll find a wide range
of responses here. From ingenious to insane -- it has
a way of opening ones eyes to the fact that it truly does
"take all kinds to make this world". Ignore the nasty (bigots,
malcontents, profane, etc) and enjoy the fun in this forum.

We have enough problems without adding to them. Some people aren't happy if they aren't causing problems. Blaming an entire race of people is the ignorant cowards way of handling things. At least the problem or problems are just a few trouble makers. Thanks for trying to stop this before it goes too far.
And, thank you for perpetuating the truth most of all.

I can't believe that people can be such complete bastards. Of course it wasn't Muslims! There was no bomb or anything, the bridge was just structurally unsound. And even if there was a bomb, who says it has to be Muslims? It could just as easily be any other religion, or a gang, or even the government in an attempt to "unify" us. (Yeah, I can see our government doing this.)

People should think before they spew stupid **** like that out of their mouths!

Some people will do anything just to cause more hatred between Islam and the world. Pathetic and sad.

Its easier for people to point fingers and make up imaginary reasons for things so they dont HAVE to look for the real reasons why. This is why we have a religion and spirituality category to begin with- too many easy ways out.

my vote would be NO

i guess those two R&Sers are operating under the old "you know about them Muslims up in Dearborn" guise

its lame. lame. lame. even if we know for a fact that some Muslims are celebrating, their celebration is due to their lack of humanity not their religion. Most Muslims/most PEOPLE are not going to rejoice over tragedy. Man its 2007 and bigotry is still rampant.

If it is true I don't think the news media will pick up those kind of things.
You can't count on the media as "proof" for anything. They are very seldom all true.
