I always thought them to be kinda white trashy.....what do think and why??? (could it be a country/rural thing)

That thought probably stems from them being prepared for you in the school cafeteria. I think that too, like, I wouldn't serve them for guests or anything, but I see nothing wrong with a night of fish sticks and tater tot bliss for just me and my hubby. And, for the record, I don't think I count as white-trashy, just because I like tater tots.

Hey, don't know too many people who haven't had them. Has it stunted their growth??? Think not. There are many ways to use tater tots. I am a gourmet cook who enjoys having people for dinner, their are certain recipes for tator tots that I serve and have no complaints, many times I am asked for the recipe. Please, trashy??? Nah, good eats, as Martha would say.

I see them as more of a food for kids, even though tater tots seem to be little grease sponges not good for a healthy diet.

I prefer tater tots to french fries anyday!!!!!
They are so succulent. French fries are so 1982.

I think they are cute for kids every now and then but I tend to agree with you if adults call it a "side dish"
