In case the can has been shaken. Tapping on the top will keep it from spewing out when you open it.

The tappers are just victims of an urban legend that tapping will keep a shaken can of soda from fizzing out. There is no truth in that.

You tap the top of the pop bottle, can or a anything that would fizz over, this takes the fizz out of the contents.

thats a complete myth that it will not explode if you tap it. ppl used to think that tapping a bottle or can would make the fizz go down but it doesn't ppl just do it cuz its a habbit.

you must be talking about marmelade cups or fruit juice
anything with gas you will try to open like this will blowup
it is just to enable to open it easily

maybe something to do with the teeth that block the cap from turning
maybe related with vacuum

I don't know...it's a habit I got into several years ago. I think someone got me started on it saying that it won't 'explode' if you do now it's just a habit.
