Sudafed, Claritin, Allegra. Sudafed will not put you to sleep. My husband has been using it for a long time. It bothers his sleep a little, though.
What really helps, though, is Flonase. It's a prescription nasal spray, but it brings swelling down and paints a teflon-like surface on the inside of your nose (and sinuses, a little). It can take a miserable person to a person with no nasal allergies.

Benadryl is an antihistamine. It can reduce some signs of an allergic response, including seasonal allergies. But, it is not a nasal decongestant that helps relieve sinus pressure or blocked sinuses. Do you have seasonal allergies?? You could also have a sinus infection, which will require an antibiotic.Best advice, call your Doc's office and speak with a Nurse. She/he can advise you. The best over-the-counter nasal spray, for now, is Ocean Mist. It doesn't have any side effects. Avoid decongestants with pseudo-epinephrine, as it contains a stimulant that can increase your heart rate, insomnia, restlessness. Are you taking anything to relieve the pain?? Motrin/Advil ( Ibuprofen) or Tylenol ( acetaminophen)?? Drink plenty of water, it's a natural way to reduce congestion, as it can loosen it up. Depending on how long that you've had these symptoms( no longer than 2 weeks) then, you need to see your Doc. I hope that this helps.

Could be sinus infection or allergies. Many people who've never had allergies are suddenly affected by hayfever the last few years due to high allergen content in the air. I've always just used OTC generic (Wal-mart brand) benedryl severe allergy and sinus. Alkaseltzer makes a great cold and sinus pill that knocks the pain right out if it is really bad. They are gel tabs, not the disolvable kind. I agree about Flonase, it is wonderful, so is Zyrtec, but they can be very expensive if you don't have insurance. You should probably get checked for a sinus infection, esp if you are having heavy mucus discharge in the nose or throat or sinus bleeding.

Stay away from Sudafed. I don't mean to pick and argument with Debbie V, but regular use of Sudafed causes problems: irritability and anger. Its like shooting up with adrenaline.
For a good a allergy medicine, go to Costco or online for AllerClear. Its the same as Allegra but much cheaper. Allegra and Claritin are too expensive for regular use, unless they are the only thing that works.
If your insurance covers it, see your doctor for allergy testing. You may be able to learn exactly what is bothering you and learn to avoid it.

many possibilities best checked by a Dr.
an infection or alergies are common causes
An infection would be treated with antibiotics, alergies by other drugs, but you need to have a good idea of the cause to find the best solution
