We are currently expecting our 5th child in Oct. This will also be our last as I'm having a tubal ligation after she is born I just can't see my body holding up to the stress of carrying another child. Our kids are 14, 10, 7 and 3 by the time this baby is born I will have spent approximately 3.75 years pregnant and 17-18 years straight of changing diapers LOL!
While we are not rich by any stretch we do not rely on government assistance either. We are very careful about where, when, and how we spend our money...I can feed our family of 6 for $450 a month and that is eating things like fresh veggies, steak, fish, chicken we don't want for food! Our kids have plenty of toys and clothes as do my husband and myself and we have vacations every 2-3 years. Plus our bills are paid in full every month, we have no credit card debt and all of our children have college funds. It can be done with good planning!
I personally would not want 17 children though :)

When I was younger I wanted 4 kids. But I had a very hard time getting pregnant and now that I am much older with one child I just don't think I have the patients for more than 2. But if you think you can afford them and if you think you can raise them up right then have as many as you want, it doesn't bother me. It just bothers me to see women having kids because then the government will give them more money. In those situations the child isn't a priority in their lives, they are putting themselves first and not taking care of their children. But if you live a life were your children are given what they need not only to survive but to thrive then by all means you have my blessing. Some people like big families and it's their right to have them if they are mature enough to take care of them and have the financial means.

I have 3 girls and that's enough for me!
And as far as how many is too many, I guess to each their own, but 17 is pretty insane! I just don't see how, with that many, there would be any quality family time. Although if you are talking about the Duggars, the kids seem to all be well behaved and know what it's like to work as a family unit. But I am pretty sure not everyone would be that lucky.

I have had 5 pregnancys, I have 3 living children. My age span is 3 years to 18 years.
I think that is plunty
I know a family here in my small town who has 9 kids, no twins.
I think, if you can afford to have 9 or 17 kids, then go for it. If you need help from the state, it is to many. My biggest concern is, do the kids get the individual attention they need? I know the family of 9 here, the kids do not.

The Duggars obviously do very well for their children and certainly don't live off of anyone's taxes. There is nothing wrong with a large family. This day and age people worry too much about what others are doing than themselves. The Duggars are providing a very stable, loving home for their children, all 17 of them. They are very well behaved and intelligent. Its not crazy, its their business. If you can't handle 17 kids then don't have 17 kids, they can, so more power to them.

Some people say that having no children is selfish (which I never understood), but I think having too many is selfish. I was the last of 4, and while I had a good childhood (I'm not complaining), getting the attention you really need from your parents is difficult. And, let's bring up an over crowded planet shall we? This world can not sustain the amount of people already on it! It may be a part of their religion or whatever, but I think trying to completely populate the world with your own kids is truly selfish.
My husband and I have chosen not to have children for many reasons, but if we did I would adhere to zero population growth. At most 2, one to replace me and my husband.

I have 3. 2 boys and a girl. We're done. I would love to have maybe 1 or 2 more, but we're done. 3 is good. Financially we can't afford any more!
17 kids is a lot, but they're happy with their decision to have that many and the kids seem very well disciplined. I watched the TV show awhile back. Good for them.
I honestly think they're nuts for having that many!

The most disturbing part of the family with 17 kids is that they are homeschooled! How can a woman running a daycare center (with her own kids) have time to teach the older children, do the laundry, cook the meals and make more babies with her husband??
Two kids is fine in an overpopulated world. I personally think it's selfish to keep burdening this planet with more consumers.

I'm going to be content with just this one.
As I've posted other places before... I don't think our government should ever place a limit on how many children a person can have. (Although, I would hope those having so many can pay for that many without government assistance.) So... I can't judge people who want to have 17, 18, or 20 children. To each their own.
I *do* think that it's important to take into consideration the state of our planet and the growth rate in your country. (In the US it's actually not bad.) It would be sad to leave your children... or children's children without a future.

I have three and to give them a good life, not rich or everything they want just a middle class life it is very hard to have the money to do so. I will have three kids in college at the same time, can you imagine that bill?
The people who just keep having child after child either have more money then they know what to do with or they will live off my taxes.
