I got a little confused last time we rented a car at Enterprise. At the end right before you take off with your car, they throw in this "now what type of insurance do you want?" I asked, if it was mandatory and he mumbled something like, "well if something happens then your own insurance would pick it up". Huh???? What does that mean? I was anxious to leave, so I just told him to sign me up for the cheapest and didn't ask any questions.

My question is, when renting a car, is it MANDATORY that you get the extra insurance with it?

Check with your auto insurance company to see what coverages you have from them when renting a car! Also check with your credit car company to see if they offer any protection on a rental car.

If your own insurance company will cover you (or the credit card company will) you do not need to buy the insurance coverage from the rental company. If you are not covered elsewhere, you may want to buy coverage there!

My insurance company will cover any rental up to the highest coverage on any car on my policy. I keep full coverage on a car that really is not worth insuring (at a very low rate) so that I have coverage when traveling and renting a car!

It is not mandatory that you purchase additional coverage. The rental company makes a lot of their profit on added coverages, and most clerks are paid a bonus for selling it! They will push it hard, but if you are covered elsewhere, you do not need it!

Usually, in my experiences with Enterprise, the 'extra' insurance is to cover the deductible gap that you would carry on your own insurance, which could be anywhere from $0 to $500. Sometimes, the more pickier rental offices will charge you for 'damage' to the car which could be a dent, scratch, even pings on the windshield from road pebbles.

I've come to use the extra insurance only if I'm using a rental in high-priced areas like NYC, or if I need to rent a car for more than a week.

If you have full coverage on you personal car then that coverage goes towards the rental car...You do not need the extra insurance...It is their way of making money...I work for a big insurance company so you rental is covered...~V

It is not mandatory to buy their insurance but you must have insurance coverage of some type. I buy theirs, even though it is high priced (for the short time used) because I can drop the car off and walk away with no hassles.

No, but you never know what could happen. I consider it buying "peace of mind". If the car gets damaged, you just walk away from it.
