The speedometer is broken.

Various causes for a speedometer to break. Could be something as simple as the cable that connects between the transmission and the gauges is broken. Could mean you need a new instrument panel.

But be warned, typically when the speedometer breaks, the odometer stops working too, so you won't be able to tell the true mileage on the car. Then again, it's an 86, so there's probably plenty of mileage already on it.

it means the speedometer is not working. my next question to the seller would be for how long has it been inoperative and how many "actual" miles on car since the speedometer quit. that means odometer or mileage is incorrect..over all should be a good car. 86 ford mustangs in gt trim are nice. i think were rated at 205 horse power with a v-8 302..if not a gt v-8 then the lesser models are o.k. also. check rear hatch for rust through when you open at top of hatch..good luck. hope ive helped some.

It's the speedometer. It could be the speedo or the drive gear on the end of the cable at the transmission if it's not working.

You have already been told what the "speedo" is.
The most likely issue is the cable and/or the point where the cable goes into the tranny.
It could be as simple as the tranny gear bullit or just a new cable.

A speedometer!
Those shouldn't be too expensice but you may wanna check like E-Bay or a junk yard first.
Since it sounds like you don't know much about cars perhaps get a Kelly Blue Book Value (of course you'll need an older book)
