Much like Vietnam, high-tech radar, jet-fighters, and highly advanced armored units, while nice to have, aren't the most effective tools to counter a three man cell armed with Kalashnikovs living off the jungle and among non-combatant civilians.

A fine example of a counter-insurgency that successfully defeated a multi-national force of guerrilla warriors has been given to us by the British: The Malayan Emergency.

an IED is nothing more than a metal casing with a detonator attached to it. It can be hidden virtually anywhere. We have jamming systems which supress the ability of them to be set off remotely, but hard wired devices are difficult to detect and cant be jammed remotely. The fact is that we have the best detection methods available in the world today. But so far nobody has created a fool proof way of identifying an IED at a distance. As far as tactics, strategy, and tech. Name a nation that has better and I will enlist!

Roadside bombs are not just sidewalk mines. These are explosive charges set in a good cover and are directed at soft and armored vehicles e.g., personnel carriers. They contain small metal balls or just nails and metal fragments to cause bodily injuries.to personnel of the enemy. This is home made imitation of the USA made Bomblets use in Lebanon by Israeli Air-force.

They are remotely controlled as opposed to mines laid in the past. Military personnel carriers made in USA are just armored Hammers or chain riding vehicles made of Aluminum for lightness not suitable for protection against high explosives

In order to prevent the charges from exploding - the Israelies use several means e.g., infantry trackers with dogs trained to detect such hidden chargers and sapers who dismantle them or robots who blow them up that are controlled from a distance. Another means of countring the threatis use of Cellular and FM signal disrupters on the vehicles - which prevents the activation through use of cellular phones.

All this is known for a long time to USA military command and USA SECDEF. Other contingents for Afghanistan's UN task force e.g., Canada.

With the huge amount of military ammo and explosives that were left just lying around back in 2003 , anyone can get their hands on the ingriedents to build a large powerful bomb. The US military has taken actions to protect our troops from these bombs. However, they are still bombs and when one explodes right beside a vehicle it is going to do damage.

actually, a large number of IEDs are discovered before detonation. more are found and disarmed than detonated.

the big problem is there is no signature. they are triggered in a variety of ways and there is no set procedure for the terrorists. makes it a hard target to find.

think of it this way. they are fighting like we did in the revolutionary war. they are breaking the normal "style" of war. so, there is alot of adapting that has to be done as well

There are new vehicles that can withstand roadside bombs, but they are not being supplied to the troops quickly. Additionally,no matter how much armor you put on a vehicle, bombs can always be bigger.

At any given day, 159,996 of our troops are safe, four are not. If we would have 30,000 troops there, we would loose maybe 1 every two days instead. With 1 Million, we would most likely loose a dozen a day.
If you have 160,000 troops in a country, where the citizens don't like you one bit, you loose a percentage a day. That's just the way it will be, unless we leave.

That's why I.E.D.s are so successful the maker's follow the rule of K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid).

To much reliance is being placed on technology and not enough use of the "Mark 1 Human Eyeball" on the ground.

Boy the 'pro' guys are up and running here and about everywhere. The Rep from New York said 80,000 Marines who died could have been saved with the right gear.

Sounds like their not a priority but the demand for big bucks keeps increeasing.

Any technology can be defeated by good tactics, discipline and training. If you have those three with technology you're golden. But if the enemy has better tactics, better discipline and better training, your golden sheen can get tarnished.
