Hi! I've been in dentistry for 25 years and the answer is yes you must. You are only avoiding the issue by not wearing them. Once you start moving the teeth, the mouth will get less sore with time and you will not have such problems. The longer you wait, the longer you will have to wear the braces so this becomes a question of how bad to you want to get in and out of the braces.
When I have had patients NOT wear the elastics, they had very slow progress and some times a month would go by with almost none. The Ortho would call me to speak to them and their parents to try to convince the patient to follow the treatment plan. I know it hurts, but it is so worth it when you have a dynamite smile and look fantastic in the end. Try this. Take an over the counter pain relief beofre you put the elastics on. Now rinse with a fluoride rinse. Act will help, but your dentist can give you something stronger. This will not only keep your teeth cavity free with the braces but help de-sensitize your teeth and help you be more comfortable. You only need to use the rinse twice a day for 2 weeks and then once a day(at night) after that. But check with your dentist to be sure he is okay with that. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie

if the orthodontist says to wear them 24/7, then wear them 24/7! i'm sixteen, and i have braces too. with rubber bands, your teeth will shift into place. but if you dont wear the rubber bands after you have worn them, your teeth will shift back to where it was without the rubber band, which is totally pointless because you'd have to repeat yr rubber bands all over again for the next month, which will extend your duration of wearing braces. but yeah, if you go out at night for a couple of hours and you want to look good, then its sorta okay to not wear your rubber bands, but only for that couple of hours. your braces wont shift back that quickly.

i would advise you to wear the rubber bands even if you are in pain or not. i relized when i had my baraces and bands that if i took tylonal or motrin before it tok pain away for a while. but if you wear the bands right after it will hurt but you wont have to worry about having pain with the bandsafter your done having pain with the braces
