On the Pentacost following the resurrection of Christ, there was a gathering of Jews from many nations. The apostles were there, and that morning the Holy Spirit descended upon the twelve and looked like little flames above their heads.

Then, when the apostles began speaking, each person in the audience heard the words in their own native language (or tongue).

Later on in the early churches, if someone were to speak in a "tongue", it was deemed as useless unless there was someone there to interpret what was being said.

The gift of tongues, or being able to speak with people who do not understand your native language is rare now. It is not really needed any more because the word of Christianity today is known world wide, and there are enough speakers of the world's languages so everybody has a good chance of hearing the gospel in their own native tongue already.

The gift may show up from time to time if needed in modern times, but those people who begin to spout babble are probably not experiencing a godly spiritual gift.

We must remember that Satan uses these things to confuse us. He may take a person with a weak mind and "tweak" them into thinking they are "holy" or "chosen".

It is our responsibility as Christians to compare these events to what the Bible says. If there is no interpretation given at the time of the speech, then it is not something we need be concerned with.

The tongues spoke about in the Bible are NOT the ramblings of today in some churches.. Tongues means different languages-- Hebrew, Latin etc... What the Bible is telling us is that those who were had the Holy Spirit reigned upon them- were able to speak to people not of their native tongue (language) It is like me not knowing Italian-- but being able to tell Italians of the Gospel ... in Italian so they can understand.

The example of real tongues in the Bible did exactly that. Everyone understood in their own language. A lot of what we have now is fake.
