Yesterday, while asking about the release date for the 80 GB PS3, the guy told me it wouldn't be backwards compatible at all. Has anyone else heard this? Does anyone know for sure if that's true?? European PS3's (of all hard drive capacities) lack the chip needed to make it play PS1 and PS2 games, so I can see that happening here as well.

No. He's an idiot. The 80GB is going to eventually replace the 60GB. The 80GB will be able to play PS1 and PS2 games.

"The larger-capacity system will go on sale in August for $599, and will have all the functionality of the 60GB model except backwards compatibility hardware. Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton confirmed to GameSpot that the 80GB PS3 will instead use software emulation to play PlayStation 2 and original PlayStation games." -Gamespot.com

I've honestly never heard of anything like this. The PlayStation's selling point has always been its backward compatibility. I believe that what he meant was the removal of HARDWARE support for backwards compatibility. Before, the PS3 used the same chips as the PS2 in order to play games. Now, however, they are going to "emulate" them instead. The PS3 will still be able to play older games, just perhaps not as many. They are doing something very similar to what the XBox 360 is doing now with its older titles.

The guy you talked to is WRONG.

What SONY is doing with the 80GB PS3, is that the new version will not include the Emotion Engine to play PS1 and PS2 games, instead, it will use an emulator to do so instead.

In other words, software emulation is used in place of hardware support and as a result, backward compatibility for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games is reduced, but you still will be able to play PS1 and PS2 games, just not as many as with the 60GB version.

HOPE THIS HELPS!
