Okay, so when you eat calories, you are supposed to work them off, right? Then how come when you don't eat those calories, it is considered unhealthy? You still aren't getting the calories, so what's the difference?

You don't burn all of those calories. You have to eat in order to keep living. If you don't your body will slow down its metabolism because its think its starving. You should eat at least 1200 calories a day and burn about 1800 calories a day so that you have a 500 calorie deficit and lose 1-2 lbs a week. Thats the safest and most effective way of losing weight and keeping it off.

Because when you eat the calories, you're body is actually digesting the food first - this means it is taking all the nutrients from the food. Then, all the extra calories (fat/carbs) are stored naturally as fat. Later, you exercise and burn these off.

Also, calories are good for you. They're energy. Too much of them, however, make them bad for you. Your body needs atleast 1000 calories daily to perform bodily functions and extra calories for regular, daily routines. (Walking around the house, reading, sitting, laundry, dressing, ect.) More calories are needed for energy to work out and play sports, but when you don't consume those calories, you're body starts to use the energy stored as fat. You then lose weight.

When you don't eat those calories, you aren't getting the nutrients you need. You also are harming your body because it doesn't have the normal calories it needs to perform bodily functions. If you aren't eating these calories, you're body will at first turn to fat to get calories it needs, but then it will start attacking your muscles, bones, and EVERYTHING. You'll turn into a stick and be at risk for death.

You need 1200 kalories a day just to stay alive - heat your body and so on. If you get much less then it's not very healthy because your body will not be able to work properly, some functions will be working badly. For example if you're starving for several days you start to faint, your skin and hair become bad... But if you get too many kalories you become very fat and that is difficult for your heart and for your body in general because your organs will be covered with thick layer of fat. Not very healthy, right?
what is good for you: you need some sport and some food, not too much and not too few.
If you don't do sports your health will be very bad - your body needs training or it will decide that some functions are not necessary and will switch them off. Sport also makes ageing slower. That's why you're supposed to get some extra kalories (1400-1800) to do sports, be active and healthy.
In general everything is good in proper quantities. It's like with medicine - if you take too few it doesn't work, if you take too much you'll poison yourself. Proper amount is always the best. Never refuse from food or from sports completely. Hope I answered your question.
