There are no physiological reasons why Muslims cannot eat pork. As part of their religious observance, they don't.

They are not the only religion to forbid pork. Judaism and some Christian groups forbid or discourage its consumption.

Our current knowledge about worm infestations comes much after the religious prohibitions in Judaism and Islam. The biblical rule is that only meat from walking animals with cloven hooves that chew their cut is clean. This excludes pigs, horses and camels. While this is now presented as a religious prohibition, it may have had a good foundation. Pigs are omnivorous, and will eat all sorts of waste. We know now that the incidence of worm infestation increases when pigs eat food scraps. Feeding pigs commercial restaurant waste etc has been banned for may years in most countries as a result. Even if the exact mechanism would not have been known when these rules were originally formed, the linkage between pork consumption and illness might well have been clear.

The other issue is basic production economics. Pigs do not graze, but are grain eaters, so they compete directly with humans. In arid countries, this will be a major production problem, and keeping pigs might not have been economically sustainable. Elsewhere, where people can produce more grain than is needed for human consumption, rearing pigs is a much better proposition. The religions that banned pork consumption originated in the arid Arabian peninsula, where pig rearing would not have made economic sense.

Pigs are dirty animals, and carry a lot of illnesses, many of which can be 'caught' by humans. They eat just about anything, including dirt, so on the health basis, pig meat is not allowed.
Pigs also have tapeworms which can be transfered to the human gut when a person eats pork that has not been heated correctly.
If you like have NOTHING else to eat, and are sure to die or get severly ill, and pork is the only thing available, then I believe you can eat it.

" ..He has forbidden you only the maitah (dead animals), and blood, and flesh of swine and that which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than allah, But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits - then there is no sin on him. Truly allah is oft-forgiving, most merciful"

But i dont think this situation would arise, so stick to veg when and if it does!

because they believe that the pigs' hooves and its twisted tail are like that of the devil's. there was a story about this but i can't remember it... but I'm sure there is! Muslims love their health and eating a dirty animal will not be good for them even for non-Muslims..

Muslim history claims that the devil's body on Earth was a pig. Their beliefs are if you eat pig, you have the devil inside you.

muslims have very strict hygiene practices. they are very clean people. they must wash before they pray because they believe, while you would look nice to meet with someone, of course you should look nice before god. so, their hygienic practices extend to their diet as well and they consider pigs to be filthy and don't eat them because of the worms and such that are in their flesh.
