First of all, a 1911 and an XD are two COMPLETELY different styles of pistols. Springfield makes both, and they make them both very well. A 1911 is a metal framed gun, most commonly chambered for .45acp, and is considered by most to be the best combat pistol ever. The XD is a polymer framed pistol, much like a GLOCK. The difference is that the XD has a grip-safety like those found on most 1911s. The XD .40 is a great sell-defense pistol. It may be the best .40 on the market considering it has a fully supported chamber, and is less likely to have a case failure than GLOCK.

First off, caliber shouldn't be your primary consideration. There are pros and cons to each. I personally prefer .40 for a number of reasons. The Springfield XD is a fine handgun. It's got a very good trigger, and I believe the .45 has a larger mag capacity than most single-stack 1911s. The 1911 is a fine handgun, but caveat emptor. There are many variations on that theme. A low-end (low cost) 1911 will lack certain features, such as a beaver-tail grip safety, lowered ejection port, ramped barrel, lighter hammer, etc. You're going to spend $1000 for a feature-comparable 1911 over the XD. You might also take a look at the Smith & Wesson M&P, and the venerable, 100% reliable Glock. I personally prefer the Glock for teaching new shooters. It's a simple platform, and the extra trigger travel is actually an excellent mechanism for learning the principle of taking slack out of the trigger, verifying the sight picture, and breaking the shot. It's also easier to teach someone how to get more hand on the gun. More hand on the gun, less recoil. I'll tell you right off to avoid the HK. It's a fine firearm, but I personally find that it's a LOT of metal above your hands (it's a big gun), with awkward controls. It's too much metal up top, and a poor platform to learn shooting. You'll get some advice from some who think the more guns they own, the more they know about shooting. Chances are they learned what they know from some gun magazine. Get informed opinions from shooters, and more importantly, TRY THE GUNS FIRST. I commend you for trying the 1911 and XD. You might check out the others, too. I've been shooting and instructing for many years, and I've used all the platforms. I shoot around 15-20K rounds a year. If you're going to really get into shooting (like USPSA or IDPA competitions), consider factors like magazine capacity, what division you'd shoot in, holster and mag pouch options, etc. Good luck on your choice. Either way you go, I'm sure you'll be happy with the decision.

Any of the Springfield Armory 1911 models are good guns.
Any of the Springfield Armory XD models are good guns.
I personally recommend the XD 45 Compact. You can carry it as a concealed weapon with the short magazine or as a duty gun with the extended magazines. Very accurate and much better than a Glock.
I think 40 cal is a compromise round between the proven 45 ACP and the 9 mm. Why compromise?

Both the springfield 1911 and the xd are fine weapons; however I would urge you to go for 45 acp instead of the 40; which was a great leap backwards.

Springfield 1911's are good guns, however the XD's are not as good. They are decent, but if you want a polymer frame gun, then get a Glock or a Sig. Stay away from the XD, they aren't built as strong as other pistols.

They are absolutely a good gun. There is a reason 1911s have been around almost 100 years they are durable reliable and the 5 and 1half inch barrel (standard) i very accurate. The nice thing about the 40. round is you get most of the stopping power of a .45 with a lot less recoil. great personal defence gun

Like everyone else said...2 different firearms. If you want a good 1911 look at Taurus PT1911. A buddy of mine loves his. As for me I love both my XDs. I have a 4" ported 9mm and a .45ACP tactical. Both are easy to shoot, clean and very fun. Way better than the Glocks. I also need to tell you I do not like .40s. I find .45s and 9s are easier on the wrist.

.40 XD is really good, especially for people with a smaller build. The .40 cal has about the same power as a .45, with the kick of a 9mm.
