Garages-do the make all females feel stupid??

Are all garages a nIghtmare, I've just taken my car for MOT to be spoken to like a fool and treat like an idiot. I want to train to be a mechanic and they are aware of this but still carried on this way, does anyone else often feel the same way?

You need to find the right garage. I love the guys at mine! They're great, very helpful and take ages and ages with my car making everything perfect. Though, admitedly, my boss' husband is a close friend of the manager of the garage. It's all about who you know, ask around. Also ask friends and family for reccomendations.

Failing that, I would ring around with a "query" to see what their customer service levels are and go for the ones that are the most helpful and sound like they know what they are talking about.

Hiya, not all garages are a nightmare !
When I have my car taken for its MOT, I will be getting a male to come with me,
I've realised they try and rip women off, because they don't think we know what we are going on about.
You need to go to a garage where a member of your family goes, take that person with you when you next need anything doing on your car.
If the garage wants both your families and you customs then they will start treating you with respect.
In the meantime, don't take that crap from anyone, if you want to be a mechanic, go for it =)

Not happened to me, I'm a bloke, but know exactly what you mean. It is a serious problem which should be addressed.

My advice to you is to get yourself a small handheld recording device, switch it on, tuck it somewhere out of sight and record what these people say.

You might then try playing back the recording you have made to their boss at a later date or same day in the afternoon etc.

You'd be amazed how much attention and respect you'll get if you let it be known that your are a journalist doing a survey of garages and their attitudes towards women.

My friend, who is a girl, goes to this local mechanic to do all the work on her car from oil changes to major work on the engine. They are friends, and she in turn fixes his computer in the station when he messes it up some how or another. They basically barter for the work. If you have any trade that the service station can use, be it answering the telephone or pumping gas, You'd be surprised how much work you can get done, without being ripped off. She recently bought new tires from this guy, and was able to have the new tires installed on her vehicle for less money than I could buy the same tires at a wholesale place.

Looks like,that you have been to a wrong garage.Maybe they want to make quick income from you.
You are a customer,whether u are male or female does not matter.
the garage workers or the boss have to explain to you.the repairs required and the cost.
After you agree,they should make good and you pay once you are satisfied with their repairs.
Dont go to the same garage anymore.

I try to treat everyone like they already know, but I say several times to them " do you understand".

It just makes sense to me - if you don't understand then I will explain in more detail.
