The 1911 and the XD line are two different guns completely. Both are excellent firearms, The XD is a little more affordable than the 1911.

I assume you are referring to the Springfield XD pistol line and the fact that it has a 1911 style grip.

To answer your question, yes the XD line is a good pistol. I just got a XD .45 Service model, and I like it a lot. It feels comfortable in my hands and has good accuracy. I haven't had any misfires or jams but I just got it, so I am unable to provide firsthand experience of longterm reliability. However the reviews on the net look good. I would recommend the 45 model to anyone looking for a double stacked polymer pistol and I would assume the .40 S&W and the 9mm are good pistols too.

They are two different types of pistols, both are good.

A 1911 was adopted by the US military in 1911.

The XD is Springfield Armory's version of Combat tupperware. They are easy to field strip and easy to use.
