Occasionally, in the countryside, I see people with air rifles shooting bunny rabbits.

I say stop this activity forthwith; leave the poor bunnies alone. What have they done to hurt you?

Going out and shooting small, furry animals is not macho or brave. It is cowardly.

Aaron, stop acting so macho. It's not big, and it's not clever. Also, what is a "dipsh*t"? Please speak English, as to do otherwise goes against community guidelines.

For the benefit of those who don't already know, this is the UK and Ireland section of the site. That is a hint.

If you knew anything about ecology you wouldn't have asked this question. People - including you - have so encroached on wildlife habitat that the natural processes for keeping wildlife populations in check are practically non-existent. Because of this there has to be controlled harvest to reduce starvation from over eating the food sources and to reduce the chance of disease. In every case I know of, when the controlled harvest has been eliminated, there actually becomes fewer numbers of the species because the natural processes cannot take over. If shooting "bunny rabbits" ends you will see a LOT of bunny rabbits in the short term and few, if any, in the long term. If I had a choice of dying from a gunshot or by disease or starvation, I'd go with the gunshot anyday.

No and frankly don't be stupid. Farmers have a hard enough time as it is at the moment and pest control is a necessary evil. Rabbits are hardly an endangered species and cause great damage especially to crofters and small holdings. Shooting is about as humane as it gets and as long as it is done responsibly I see no problem with it, used to shoot myself as a teen growing up in a farming community.

As for the liberal comments above by all means go ahead and give the rabbits guns to even it up, I'd like so see them operate them ;-)

As for shooting rabbits is horrible? Well it's not nice for the rabbit fair enough but the worse farm production gets in this country the more we import and I can assure that animal treatment in many many countries abroad is far worse than it is here. Whilst you are at it lets protect cows, sheep and pigs as well or because they are mainstream meat production do they somehow deserve to die? Does an animals right to live depend on how cute and fluffy it is?

I spent some time on a farm when I was a boy, and rabbits ate our gardens, so Dad told me to shoot them. That is what they did to hurt us. Should we allow pests to make us starve, rather than killing them? PeTA says so. They want to ban animal testing that has saved millions of human lives and will save millions more. I wouldn't shoot rabbits with air rifles. I used a .22 rimfire rifle or various pistols.

That happens where rabbits have become a pest. Some airgunners I know shoot pest rabbits and the carcasses are given to the local wildlife park to feed the big cats.

i agree.. do you now how fast rabbits multiply.. its just as bad if not worse than cats! I am a huge animal lover.. and i agree.. if your shooting for food, pest control, or shooting and donating to the local reserves.. then there really isnt any harm.. but shooting to shoot.. is a big problem! With me and with alot of local laws..

Personally, I only do it with a pellet rifle when I can't use a firearm.

They are complete pests to my wife's garden, they carry fleas, and after a good cleaning and removal of the skin, it makes a nice dinner.

On a serious note if you shoot them & eat them then fair enough. ( Rabbit is really nice meat.) If its just for fun or sport then shoot a clay pidgeon, its a good laugh.

do you have any idea how fast they multiply? and do you know how bad they destroy peoples gardens? I'm a hunter, and rabbit is very good eatin, and as long as its a clean kill and you eat it, there's nothing wrong.

What have they done to hurt me? well lets see. nothing directly to me, but they have ruined my parents, grandparents and great grandparents gardens, they dig holes which are problems for my grandparents horses, so yes, they have done something to "hurt me"

Personally, I use a shotgun, but I make sure I eat anything that I kill. if rabbits weren't controlled this way, and by foxes, farmers would just gas them in their warrens.

WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT???

Rabbits are great eating! There is nothing wrong with killing rabbits for food, afterall they are so prolific that deer starve every winter because of them.

Do you eat meat? Please shut up and try to mind your own business next time.
