So the wifes car broke down today while her and her friends were going on a girl weekend. I had to go pick them up and drop them off at their destination. We live in arizona and it gets pretty hot here so someone in the caravan was ehh... how do you put it? dressed imodestly,
anyhow this girl was blessed so to speak in many departments body being one of them. We talked for quite awhile, but at the end of it you were be hard pressed to convince me that
A: She had a head at all
and
B: That she had much to say.
Now I know shes very bright and always a good conversationalist but seriously... I only remember one thing about the moment... well a couple of things but you get my point.
So is this then why muslim women wear the ... sorry, hat thingy they wear? Simply because men like me... well you know.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Hello. Well, the first reason women were given the command do cover is so that we would set ourselves apart, make ourselves distinctive and be known as women who believe in God. Modesty is also part of the reason. When you allow a woman to cover, you allow her to be seen as a person and not an object. Even if this lady you had been talking to were a Mensa member, you'd be more likely to remember her bust size rather than her IQ. When women put themselves on display - hair, makeup, cleavage, heels - they are saying, "I don't think I can get your attention by using my intelligence, so I'd better use my body". It is a sad statement that women think that plastering on makeup, wearing foot-hobbling heels and tight clothes, plucking, shaving, waxing and all the rest represents FREEDOM. It is rather a different kind of oppression.
I pray that Allah guides you to that which is best in this world and the next. Ameen.
Fi Aman Allah,
Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid

I couldn't help smiling while I was reading your question. You put it more or less correctly.
The Man Comes Around, thank you so much for your reply. This is precisely the sentiment Muslim men are supposed to have! What I mean to say is that it is not only the woman's responsibility to dress modetly but a man's to dress modestly (one) and secondly to keep his gaze lowered. I quote a verse for you guys from Quran:
[24:30-31] Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them; and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands...
As you see order for men has come before that for women. Both are similar except that for women there is an added element of not displaying their beauty which is a very elaborate term.
"Why should women cover themselves up while its men's fault " would be the logical question. Well then my reply is that it is not anybody's "fault". it is the way men and women are created by God. Women ARE attractive in their bodily features. A man wearing shorts is not analogous to a woman wearing shorts, plainly put. Also, of course it is not practical fro men to go about blindfolded in the world :) But it is quite possible for women to be decently dressed up. It does not necessarily have to be a black shawl lke thing. It can be any dress, skirt, trousers, anything as long as it is covering up the whole body, is not see through and is not too tight. Such dresses are, in fact, very convenient to carry as compared to skin tight skirts etc that I see many women wearing.

Im glad you understand now. :) The Muslims that cover correctly(hijab is the head covering & not tight fitting clothes & only the hands, face& feet can be shown) is to protect both male & female from lust. Most people would be happy to be married to someone that attracted them for their personality & inteligence.
I also have seen many people over the years dont want to ever get married, they just want to date others. When they date, they have sex with many people. GOD didnt have us here to try each other on like trying on shoes.
Then they live with each other like a couple & have children out of marriage. Not a stable lifestyle.
~peace be with you

Well, Muslim women aren't the only to wear head coverings. Some protestants do, less than before, but some still do. And, notably, most of the Eastern Churches do. I'm Eastern Orthodox, and head coverings are generally promoted in our Churches. So I think I have the ability to shed some light on the issue.
It seems that most of the Muslim women agree with you here, it does help if a woman dresses modestly. As for myself, I know for certain that it helps me a ton. My battle is not only against the actions but also for the purification of my nous (intellect/mind). It is so much easier to keep my thoughts pure when I have a direction to look in that does not view an immodestly dressed woman.
Living in a college town, I have really begun to appreciate the modest customs of Muslims and more conservative Christians, and also some other less common religions. It's like a ray of sunlight shining through the black storm clouds for someone who desires to be rid of this vice (and I do desire it so that it pains me to know it has not been 100% defeated within myself - I struggle against it in desperate hope for freedom). You can train yourself to divert your eyes, but when every place to divert causes your eyes to fall on something else explicit, victory over the vice becomes a near impossible challenge.
Still, there are those such as me for whom defeat is not an option, who cry freedom to the death as Mel Gibson did in Braveheart. We may fall, but we will not suffer to give up. For us, a woman who dresses modestly is a gem of endless value. The head covering is only one part of this, but it still is important.
Ladies, thank you for your considerate modesty, those of you who practice it. There are no words to express my gratitude to you.

You have made your point & its a good one but try to look at the whole picture.
There is quite a large proportion (indeed majority in my opinion) of girls who prefer to be admired for their physical looks and beauty (Nature has made all sorts of women & correspondingly equivalent type of men). I agree there may be also quite a large number of women who prefer that they be judged on whats there between their ears (quite a few men like such women).
In my opinion there is nothing wrong with both categories of girls & they are welcome to wear their choice of clothes and their choice of life style. Its FORCING women (or men) to adhere to a dress code is something I cannot accept.

lol Yes dear brother that's pretty much the reason.
#1-- Because Allah has made is mandatory
#2-- We don't have to worry about being seen as eye candy
#3-- It allows us to be on the same level as men, in terms of intellect.. since beauty is usually associated with women, and we want people to focus on our mind and our words
#4-- Gives us a bit more dignity and shows we have self-respect
#5-- It's also to preserve our beauty for only one man, our husbands
#6-- It also gives us a chance to represent Islam
But you put it very well :)

Yes brother, Muslim women wearing hijab allow themselves to be evaluated for intelligence and skills instead of looks and sexuality.
Allah has told them to do so:
"O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not annoyed..." (Qur'an 33:59)
Check those articles about Hijab they are really good:

we wear a hijab for this reason and it lessens temptation to commit adultery and fornicate. guys wear hijab too only a certain of a man's body is allowed to be seen, the same as women. you can see their hair, but not from teh bellybutton to the top of the knee. it just prevents alot of bad situations. you are a prime example of why it is better to wear hijab. but thanks for admitting it, many guys say that a half naked woman doesn't tempt them at all, i could see if a gay guy said this but not a straight one at least you are honest
