There's NO PAY. It's STRAIGHT COMMISSION.

Can you sell? If you have no sales experience, I'd try to do it evenings and weekends (sales guys have to work 60 - 80 hour weeks anyway, so you're not losing anything) while you keep your day job.

Teaching experience means NOTHING in the insurance sales world. Sales experience - ANY sales experience - is a better predictor of success.

There most likely is not a payscale since this position is normally commission based. Therefore you'll want to find out what the commission structure is. You will probably make around minimum wage your first two to three years. My question is why are you leaving 20 years of teaching to start a new career? My sister is a teacher and I can see that that career is stable. You are about to venture into a world of unstability. Good luck with your decision.

You should probably keep your cushy tenured job (I hope after 20 years you're tenured). They are either sending you out to do your own production which will be straight commission (and as an economics prof, you may have prob with their products) or they are hiring you internally as a type of consultant. Even if the latter is the case, you are probably running a little more business risk than if you stay with the university.

My brother is an economist with the BLS and as long as he publishes, he keeps his job. Insurance companies try to lean themselves out from time to time. Manulife fired its entire US field force in one day because brokerage was more profitable, then they buy JH. These waves of nonsense come and go. That's part of the reason I have so many companies.

I would suggest that you ned to go for the interview as it will help to grow your network if u are not taking up the job there and also it is an oportunity so why do u want to waste an opportunity without exploring it.
