Why is it that most of the christians I meet demand that people respect their religious choice but refuse to respect people who don't chose christianity?
I've seen many, many christians badmouth or blatantly insult people from other religions. Even going so far as to acuse them of being demons, satans followers ect...
I try to keep an open mind but seeing so many people act this way is starting to harden my veiw towards Christianity and it's followers.
Any suggestions on how to approach this subject tactfully with said people would be greatly appreciated. So far "please respect their veiws, they haven't disrespected yours." has only gotten me lectures on how their way is the one way. >_<

Don't worry, I know not all Christians, not even most are like this. That's why I put in 'zealots'.
Lori, thanks for copying my post and leaving no helpful input on the subject. Your sarcasm is noted.

The people I'm having problems with are people I interact with irl and I don't really have a choice but to interact with them. Some are in my family and others are in my class. It's difficult for me not to become offended or upset when they insult or act rudely to those I'm close to.
Which is why I've posted this thread, to try to find a way to stop this.

I read your first sentence and that's all, and i wanted to go ahead and answer, yes i agree, Christians ain't offering no love to anybody but the congregation in there church, this is the faulty ones, if anything Christians should be the most open minded people on the earth, after all it says to love thee neighbor, all sins are forgiven, but there is a problem and that is the bible contradicts it selfish or does it, its says some where in the bible that gays are dammed to hell, so then you see allot of Christians gay bashing, and plane being into there own and not con formative, the way i see it, is only god can judge so who knows what is in a persons heart, so love everyone, and try and get along with everyone, I am a christian

Literalism-based religious extremism is a type of mental malady. It's a very understandable one if you consider the major shifts in perspective that occurred in the 2nd half of the last millenium. We live very tenuously here on our little dirt rock, or so it must seem to some. Society shifts quickly. Life on this earth could end through any number of catastrophes. We rush onward to develop technology that we don't understand and can't imagine the ramifications of.
I don't blame people for retreating into certitude, for looking to the idea of something enduring. It's irrational, yes. Their smug certainty despite that irrationality is completely infuriating.
But you can't be mad at the sick. It's a hard world, and they've chosen their drug. Hopefully their higher power will guide them to the right 12 step program to get them out of it, too.

I find that you get that from all religions from a certain percentage of the people. I think it is human personality and it really does not reflect on the religion at all. Also many people of all religions answer according to the `tone`of the question asked. Even your question here has an anti-christian tone to it and I think will bring some negativity in the answers you receive. Just guessing here.

Not to be rude, but you are on the Internet, which means you have to consciously decide to read their post and respond to it; so why not just ignore these types of people? May I ask the following questions ....
Why do you allow them control of your emotions? It is also your decision, as to how you react to others.
Why let them get you in an 'uproar, it doesn't hurt them, and will only cause you to possibly develop an ulcer?
And finally, Just out of curiosity why do you allow them, to control the way you interact with others?

Gal 5:22-23, "22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
These attributes are those which are to be found in persons who are truly saved. Nowhere is it mentioned in God's word to be disrespectful to anyone because of their beliefs. Just because these people of whom you speak claim that they are Christians, that doesn't make them so.
edit; All Christians are zealous by definition, they have a zeal for God and for God's word. The individuals you are questioning are not Christians.

What a coincidence. I'm having a problem with atheist zealots. Why is it that most of the attheists I meet demand that people respect their religious choice but refuse to respect people who don't chose atheism? I don't have that problem with wiccans. Odd.
I've seen many, many atheists badmouth or blatantly insult people from other religions. Even going so far as to acuse them of being fools, idiots, deluded, sheep etc...
I try to keep an open mind but seeing so many people act this way is starting to harden my view towards atheism and it's followers.
Any suggestions on how to approach this subject tactfully with said people would be greatly appreciated. So far "please respect their views, they haven't disrespected yours." has only gotten me lectures on how their way is the one way. >_<

I take an "origins of christianity" approach. Many Christians can find a verse to justify burning witches, etc.
Take that verse, and look it up on wikipedia, or the original hebrew or greek, or latin. The King James version is a lot harder on non christians, then some earlier texts from before Christinaity was the dominat paradigm in the western world.

That's a very easy one !!! You just don't get into any discussions on religion. A lot of people just need to feel they are right in all of their "supposed" beliefs, so just let them think that. Just ignore anyone, in general, who badmouths others.
Did you ever hear the saying: "Never discuss religion or politics -- you'll always get into trouble or a fight !"

If "no thanks, I'm not interested" doesn't work (and I'm all for being polite), tell them that if they like works of fiction, anything by Douglas Adams or the Harry Potter series are much more enjoyable reads than that tired old book they're quoting from. Or tell them you're too old for make-believe.

Ignore them as best as you can. Each time they open their mouths and speak hatred they are just making themselves look more foolish.
Or you could simply say to them How Christian of you to talk of hate rather than love.
