This sounds like a sprain. Water retention around the joint after injury - like pointing the feet during exercise - is there to protect the joint.
Epsom salts / Magnesium Sulphate, and keep off it!

It is very difficult to heal without taking any pain killers, at least in the beginning. For you to do any physiotherapy or any kind of exercise,you will first have to reduce the pain.
You can do some hot water treatment, you can put some salt in the hot water and keep pouring on the areas, wear it is paining, or you can use a hot water bag.
And then it will be easier for you to do exercise.
Sometimes, the pain can last for long period of time, so you need to be little patient.You should consult a orthopedic, who will advise you on the kind of exercise, which is suitable for you.

Get asprin based pain killing creams to rub on, or MOVELAT from boots, Tesco do a good one for about £3, instead of pills, get good quality soft sole shoes which cushion as you walk, support the underside of your knees with a cushion at night, special knee supporting cushions are available. Take fish oils, Omega 3 and cod liver oils together. Buy a memory foam mattress, these are around £200 and may help with ankle pains too.

Relatively pain free flexibility exercises, low impact aerobic exercise, supplementing your diet with omega-3 fatty acids, taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications when the pain increases beyond your tolerance. (I'm assuming you mean painkillers = narcotic/opiate based meds). You can consult with a physical therapist or athletic trainer to get you started.

My doctor recommended I take DOUBLE STRENGTH Glucosamine 500mg /Chondroitin 400mg.

My mother and younger sister both are positive for RA. so far I am negative... but i get knee swelling and pain.. and pain in my back..

Doc said prior injury makes your joints more susceptible to inflammation. But talk to your doctor about adding vitamins to your daily regimen.

Try removing wheat from your diet for three weeks. It worked wonders for my Aunt.
