Atlas the first cervical vertebra is a bony ring and gets the well deserved name as it carries the load of its globe namely the cranium. Axis the second cervical spine has an upward protrusion called Odontoid process whose sudden fracture by weight, presses on the respiratory center killing the person instantaneously , a feature better known to hangmen than others.The other cervical vertebrae are similar in structure.The cervical spine is flexible,extendable,laterally flexible to right and left. Rotation by 90 degrees to right and left are also possible.
Any injury to cervical spine is potentially fatal. Or neurologically damaging as many cranial nerves are in close contact.
Sterno cleido mastoid and Longissimus capitis are very important muscles
