i'm an agency worker, ive been on this current site for 7 months. if i get handed a shovel in a ditch and told to open it 20 foot you can bet 2 hours later i'll still be shovelling away. so i'm reliable and very easy to find. i dont take smoke breaks and i use my mobile only at break time, which i'm not payed for. but the management desperately want to get their hands on my moby number which i wont give. they want me they can find me and vice versa. one fella on site has my number a good workmate, even he knows only to phone me if in work hours it better not be work related. but i've been off recently after an accident in work, the management have been after him to get my number which he wont give either. my agency boss has my number any probs they deal with him and he in turn deals with me. he signs my pay checks after all. am i being rude to a future employer, or well within my rights to keep something private that i pay for and dont use for work purposes except the agency?

I admire how you've stuck to your guns!
Up to a year ago, I had a second job as a delivery person for a chinese takeaway. I worked hard, gave value for money, was reliable. I had to change my phone number about four months after starting there; the boss's wife rang me anytime a driver didn't turn in. At first I didn't mind too much; the extra hours were welcome. then it became ridiculous - she rang me for everything that went wrong in the place. I made the mistake of helping her out a few times, and she thought she owned me.
The last straw came when she rang me one night to come in and work when I was on my way to a family "do". I told her I couldn't . She screamed at me down the phone, so I hung up, and that decided me.
I kept my mobile phone, but changed the number; just gave it to two trusted colleagues!
It sounds expensive, but you could get a second phone, a really cheap one, and give them that number if you wanted to keep them happy. Then NEVER have it with you, so they would have to leave voicemail msgs for you all the time.

You sound like a good worker. Look at it from the employers point of view. A good agency worker stops coming in is he thinking the agency will place you somewhere else. he does not want to lose you. Is he concerned about the accident you had? if he likes you he may offer you a permanent job
I would give him the number but tell him it's for emergencies only

It looks like either you've got something to hide or are an edgy person. The agency sign your pay check, the boss has a contract with the agency, he pays for your services, but not your pay cheque.
Also, just because your phone rings, doesn't mean you have to answer it!

You are quite right to withhold your mobile number from your employer. If your employer wishes to contact you out of hours, suggest that you are provided with a separate phone which you will turn off when it is not convenient to receive calls.

Lotsa companies are like that. YOU pay for a cell fone, and THEY want the number so they can bug the hell outa ya! :( They have no right to it, and don't give it to them! They will only use it to bug you! :(
I heard of a company that gets the employees cell fone numbers, and calls them ON THE FLOOR about sales they made, or are making. The employee has to pay for the call! Very unfair!
If they wanna call you on a cell fone, tell them to supply the fone! Walkie talkies would be much cheaper.

You are absolutely in the right! If they want to be able to contact you then they should supply you with a phone.
My last holiday, I had people from work phoning me (like you, it's my personal phone which I pay for) when they knew I was on holiday, and to add insult to injury, I was abroad so *I* ended up paying for a large part of the calls!

Companies use their employees mobile phones (for which THEY don't pay) for any silly reason they may think of. You are right, do not give your mobile. When you leave the premises, you are done, you do not owe them anything more and there is nothing that cannot wait until you are back.

If they want to reach you outside of work or during work on a cell, they should provide it. It's your phone for which you pay the bill, so they have not right to the number.

You are absolutely right, you have no contract with them, they can get you through the agency. I don`t give anyone my mobile number unless i want them to have it.
