I want to ask whether you can ride a bmx for the purpose of getting from one place to other, or only for tricks and stuff?

Sure - but it will suck if you need to ride say 10 miles round trip. Single speed, very short crank arms and low seat height. You will go slow and have your knees in your face. A mountain bike would be far more versatile. If your growing the bmx will be even harder to ride.

If I had a choice between walking ten miles or a bmx bike I'd choose the bike - but not by much!

You definitely can any bike for transportation. Use whatever kind of bike makes you happy. However that is not to say that all bikesa are efficient. BMX bikes will require more energy to get from one pace to another just based on the wheel and crank size. If you're ok with that, you're good to go.

If you are looking for it as general transportation to point A to B. Sure you can use it for that. But it's a smaller frame and a little heavier. You probably would not want to use it for any long distance travel.

I'd consider a hybrid or cruiser with 8 speeds at least.

The bmx bike is perfectly capable for journeys,

although other bikes would be more suitable,

yes it is more of a struggle, but on a bmx its a hell of a lot more cool.

BMX bikes are just as good for transport as any other bike, they might even be healthier b/c the only have one gear. this makes it different on hills. so a bmx bike is okk to ride anywhere
