should you get the stain guard or can you do it yourself cheaper? If so what is the best kind of protectant to use?

I think I am going to go with cloth not leather. sorry should have been mre specific

You can easily do it yourself with 3M Scotchguard fabric protectant. This is what I have always used and continue to do so.... and by the way... that's what they'll use at the store to do it but they'll just charge you more....

If the protection they are offering is only a spray on Scotch Guard type of product, save your money. The first time you have your sofa cleaned the Guard will be gone. The protection should actually be injected into the fabric in order to be worth the investment.

if you get the stain guard, some places will guarantee it. meaning if they can't get a stain out they will replace it. if you do it yourself use scotchguard. about 3-4 dollars a bottle last time i checked, but no guarantee.
