Tricky. Perhaps if you really would liek to give cash and can afford it and you think he will not be embarrassed by such a gift and is in need of the cash then any amount you can spare would be a nice gift with a nice note or words. Otherwise maybe a gift that would tie in with what he might be planning to do with all his free time?

Its hard to explain. But sometimes people like to help people out because they can and that makes them feel good. He gave you the money precisely becasue of the fact that you are not wealthy. So giving cash that you obviously cannot afford would take away from his "good feeling". In fact it may make him uncomfortable.
Either way money is so not the way to go. A gift, evn inexpensive would be much more appreciated. Later when you guys have money then you can pay him back a bit...... then that gesture even if it does not even come close to what he has done (though I bet he won't accept it). Then he will feel good that his money was well spent.
Don't give cash.

I don't mean to sound mean, but I feel that $300 to $500 is a bit excessive! I understand that he has been very generous to you, but wouldn't that mean that he is aware of your situation and would understand that you wouldn't be able to afford a large amounts? I not would give more than $200.
I'm curious... Why cash? Does he have everything and you can't think of anything to buy for him? Do you have Shopping Centre vouchers where you live? (in my area - we have several shopping centres which allow you to buy a gift voucher from centre management that would be able to be redeemed at any of their stores)
Alternatively , how about an actual gift? Maybe something he can pursue in retirement.

Give the amount you're comfortable with. Anywhere from $300- $500 sounds reasonable to me. Good luck!

You should give him a strip tease. Nothing says thank you like grinding up on your father in law!

I actually wouldn't give cash. I would much sooner give a thoughtful gift or make a donation to his favorite charity, without disclosing how much you donated. (It's rude to do so.)
