how do you make some parts of a picturre in color when the rest of the pic is in black and white??

ex:
i want a single pink flower to show up in color while the rest of the pic is black and white....

ya dig?

duplicate layer, then desaturate the 2nd layer to black and white, place a layer mask, and use paint brush to bring back color, make sure that the colors are set on either black or white. hope this helps.

Some of the others have each recommended part of the best way to do this.

Here's my recommendation:
1. Add a Channel Mixer adjustment layer.

If you don't know how, start by going to Layer Menu ->New Adjustment Layer -> Channel Mixer...

2. click okay in the next box.

3. Check the bottom Monochrome box in the next dialog and click okay. (there are other changes you could make here, but experiment later)

This will create the new layer (and it comes with a mask built in that's why we chose the adjustment layer instead of dupe background layer).

4. Look in the Layers Palette (right side of screen) and click in the second box of this new layer (that's the mask)

5. Now choose a paint brush and black color to selective paint away the b&w to reveal the color. Make a mistake? - just change color to white and repaint to b&w.
