she was asking for food, so i put down her usual dry food, and poured some oil-packed tuna over it (she ate the food fine yesterday, the oil-packed tuna by itself earlier today, and is never ever a picky eater. she will eat anything, and doesn't mind having water, broth, etc. mixed into her dry food). in the end she refused to eat this. why?

Cats are finicky, she is training you to not mix her food up. Cats bury their bodys rejects poop. So since she rejected what you gave her, she is pretend burying it. Cats day is never done. More eat, more water, more sleep, more watch the day/night go by. more playtime.

Either she wasn't hungry at the moment or she's finding the food is getting a to rich or she's looking for something new. Take you pick. One of those 1, 2, 3 quessing games.

What she was doing, was trying to cover her food. Many dogs and cats will do that. She just could have been off her feed.

Surprise her with a hand cooked gourmet meal. What the heck, you're half way there anyway. I say go for it. You may even get an extra (kiss) lick from you favorite friend.

Good luck with your little sweety. Have fun figuring out what she wants to eat.

Cats play with their food,

Wash out the bowl, put a little dead yeast powder on top of the food, and pretend like you are eating it (sound like your enjoying it too and the cat will get curious.)

Inactive or sick cats often lose their appetite.
(hair ball season? molasses paste from vet helps them pass it.)

Usually my cats do this when they don't like the smell of the food. (Like when they want to cover up their smelly poop). They never eat it after mking the scratching move. I don't know why, but your cat didn't like the smell of what you gave her. Clean the bowl well and try again with sth. else.

My cat often used to do this.

Cats do this out of instinct, to 'cover up' their food for later, so other animals don't find it.
