A Serb Bosnian stupidly assassinated the Austro-Hungarian Crown Prince nephew and his wife in Sarajevo, under the instructions of the Black-Hand a group of dissatisfied Serbian Officers, Emperor Franz-Josef got annoyed and decided to teach Serbia a lesson, he invited Bulgaria and Prussia to join in to share the spoils, the Russian Tsar and the French objected and the UK got drawn in when France and Belgium were attacked.
It ended because in 1917 the USA entered the war with unlimited supplies of men and material, by this point it was to late for Prussia and its associated German states to win, bled dry of men and material, Austria was in a similar situation with men fighting in France & Flanders, Northern Italy and in the Balkans.
Germany got nailed for prolonging the war in the west when it was clear from 1917 they had no chance to win but Hindenberg & Luddendorf were to stubbon to see that.
Serbia got away with starting the war virtually scot free!!!
