I have a JBL GTO 601.1II amp that runs at 424 Watts RMS x 1 channel at 4 ohms. With it I have a P1222 (400W RMS, 1200W Peak). I was on the highway and my lights started going crazy, I stalled and couldn't get my car to start. I had it checked a the Ford service center (I have a Ford Escape 2005, XLS) and they said my alternator was busted. I paid $600 for a new one. Is it because of my car audio system? How do I prevent this from happening again? Do I need an external battery for my sound system alone? and lastly, how do I set it up?

That is what happens when you don't properly design your sound system. Its a common mistake that most beginners make.
The Ford has a sensitive computer system.
When you have a system with a high current demand.
It will cause a voltage drop. The computer can get damaged.
A stock alternator can not handle the additional load.
Figure out the total power out put of your system.
You will need a stiffing capacitor. 1 farad per 1000watts

IMPROPER HANDLING OF THE CAPACITOR CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.
HIRE A PROFESSIONAL TO INSTALL CAPACITOR.

A secondary battery, like the Optima. Don't use regular batteries. It releases gases. A gel cell like the Optima is sealed so no battery gases is released.
I hope you wired your amps properly.

Get a semi alternator lol. No search online for capacitors. The are sized by something called "farades" For the system you speak of I wouldn't go with anything less than a 3 farade capacitor. Also you could get another battery. They would solve the problem right there put it in the very back of your escape. The power cord from your other battery should be hooked up to the positive side of the 2nd battery. Keep the same ground wire plugged however it is. Then run a separate ground wire from the battery somewhere else in your car. Hook up the power of your amp to the positive side of your battery. And you'll be back to pissing off the neighbors. For more help on hooking it up look up "circuit wired diagrams".

hook your amp up to a capacitor and than to your battery. It shouldn't be hooked directly to the battery or you will blow it every time.
$600 for an alternator was way too much money. They got you on that one!!
